An #ITU study https://www.itu.int/itu-d/reports/statistics/2024/11/10/ff24-internet-traffic/ reports that we transferred over 7 zettabytes of #Internet traffic in 2024. However, the authors do not describe what all those data actually were.

Therefore, I have performed extensive research to classify every byte, and I can now share this summary of the purposes of all the year's traffic.

Happy New Year!

Facts and Figures 2024 - Internet traffic

International bandwidth usage

@gtw I don't believe advertising is that low. Especially now that they use videos everywhere.

@gtw Plus automatically generated e-mails that don't reach anyone, are automatically filtered, go to dead mailboxes or generate an auto-response, that sends an auto-response back ad infinitum. (all additionally to spam)

Watching our corporate e-mail servers, I always wondered how many of these actually exist in total. The answer is probably disturbing.

@gtw I'm reading the methodology section of your paper and it seems a bit fizzy.

@gtw

They need to report the volume of shitposting traffic.

@gtw
Wow, I didn't know that #porn actually is so #irellevant!
@don

@gtw Increasingly, I find it easy to believe the New World Order is simply the Chinese surveillance state model.

Whilst we're encouraged to hate the Chinese, the west is monitoring us in the background in much the same way.

@gtw

Won't be long before that image is scraped and used as an authoritative source in some mainstream media's punditry.

@gtw Two other numbers I was obsessed with for a while. Yearly records, Trends and growth rates

1) Total data generated
2) Total data storage

IDC and others used to do this. But I haven't seen real figures for a while. 10 years back and Data generated was doubling about every 18 months, Data storage was doubling about every 24 months. Implying, creating and *forgetting* more data than ever before. And a *now* window of < 5 years.

@gtw 2 doubling periods back for History, Anything before that is only 10% of now. 2 doubling periods forward for Future. Now is only 10% of what will be there after that. Meaning that the easy to understand window of "Now" is only 4 doubling periods long.

Beware anything with short doubling periods. By the time you see the problem, you're only a couple of periods away from the hard constraint.

@gtw @gsalvisberg So streaming platforms are for nothing?
@gtw The irony this is a PNG!
