First lesson in informatics in the elementary schools was to follow the "correct" procedure to turn on/off computer, I think it was called "power-sequencing" where to turn on the PC you first turn on the computer then the monitor and to turn off you first turn off the monitor then the computer.
This was, of course, the era of Pentiums and CRT screens and no ACPI shutdown.
