A little after midnight on Christmas, I received an unsolicited "roast" for one of my open source libraries.

The roast was AI-generated.

Naturally, I decided to look into who's behind this spam campaign and expose them.

Roasted Christmas Spam from Muhu.ai - Dhole Moments

I wrote what I thought would be the final blog post of 2024 last week, and was looking forward to starting 2025 strong with a blog I’d been drafting since July 2023. But then, a little after …

@soatok
> In fact, many webpages that used to be available on their website (such as their security policy page) are no longer available, but still exist in Google’s cache.

And this is exactly why I make ample use of the wayback machine's saving functionality, even got the extension for quick access. Gotta hold these fucks accountable.

@KaiserOfNone @soatok In the settings I have it set up to autoarchive anything that has no backup in the last 7 days, I know not everyone might be aware of it so commenting for posterity

@soatok Love me a proper OSINT story. Thank you for posting this.

Also, CAN-SPAM really needs better enforcement.

@soatok heya, I didn’t see it mentioned in your post but it’s possible this person is operating their company using the Estonian e-residency / digital nomad offering

Paris is/has also been a strong startup scene

So there’s quite strong hustlegrift vibes coming off this mofo

@soatok As a datapoint: I also got one of these. It seemed to be a weird pick: not the most popular thing I’ve ever done.
@soatok @neil I got one too. I was still thinking about what to do, when I read your toot/blog just in time...
@soatok nice writeup and lets hope the european law holds up what is written
@soatok Philosophy Tube is many things, but rarely is it "succinct" 😛
@soatok
Thanks.
I also got this weird spam.

@sebsauvage @soatok so, one of the elements of the GDPR is that a "data subject" (anyone whose data is kept by an organisation) can request access to the personal information they have on them (article 15.1 of the GDPR).

As a data protection officer for an organisation, who has received a data subject request, it is very annoying to comply - but absolutely legally necessary.

Since the controller (muhu.ai) evidently has some personal data from you (your e-mail addresses at a minimum) you are "data subjects" under the GDPR and are eligible to make a request for all of your data.

After you receive your data, you can also submit a data erasure request.

@soatok in the UK you could describe somebody as "a roaster" or "an absolute roaster" as an insult. This chap appears to be an absolute roaster
@soatok thank you for your blog posts, they are always interesting and a joy to read

@soatok
I don't understand repo roasting, but I DO understand smarmy confolk and their misadventures. Sorry that you had to do this, but excellent work and hopefully something that at least someone else can use to learn about this sort of thing.

See you in 2025 nerd!

@soatok
Wow that has got go be the shittiest and most cringe roast i have ever read. It totally lacks any sense of personality and feels like it is a template filled in with words from your project.

I really hope this Franck will never get succesfull with this. Let him waste his time and effort and perish into nothingness

@soatok Thank you, I also got this unsolicited roast, one that was mainly mocking my single commit in 7 years for a Github repo where I shared Krita brushes in the past...
@soatok Side comment. The Philosophy Tube presentation on AI is brilliant!! TY for sharing that as well.
@soatok It is frustrating when you spend a lot of freetime and money to provide and this became the new normal. Especially when you're left on your own despite your work.

@soatok: one of my acquaintances asked an LLM to generate a 'counterargument' to some legal defences that I wrote up for a (potentially copyright-infringing) project I'm working on.

I didn't find anything which refutes my points other than the obvious facts which made me write my defence in the first place.
