I'm new to soldering, is this normal?
@lcamtuf nice welding iron you've got there
@lcamtuf this is a Homer-Simpson-Causes-a-core-melt-in-a-simulator-that-didn't-even-originally-contain-fissible-material scenario, isn't it?
@lcamtuf are you using tungsten as solder?
@lcamtuf when you want a smooth upgrade from soldering to welding

@lcamtuf
Totally normal for physics to behave this way. In fact, if the iron wasn't glowing after passing the "error" amount of current would be cause for alarm.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

@lcamtuf Oof - thermal runaway thermostat fail thing?
@lcamtuf Is that one of those Plutonium 238 powered deals?
@lcamtuf Soldering, or forging?

I had a solder get red hot, but it was barely visible. That's a bit too much
@lcamtuf ERSA iCon cosplay
@manawyrm @lcamtuf
Thats what a soldering iron for steel looks like. Always wondered that.
@lcamtuf ah, you set it to brazing, that's slightly hotter than soldering
@lcamtuf you're holding it on the wrong end /s
@lcamtuf I had that exact thing happen on the same type of station not once but twice. One had a shorted output mosfet, the other I didn't bother debugging and instead replaced the station with something less crappy. I also found out that this comprehensively fucks the coating on the tip, so the tip needs replacing too if you repair the station.
@lcamtuf That's a nice soldering light.
@lcamtuf Do it like a pro.

@qbi
Text: An image of a person holding the soldering iron by the metal part. It says,

"Wir sind Handwerker. Wir können das.

Das Handwerk.
Die Wirtschaftsmacht. Von Nebenan."

@lcamtuf

@qbi @lcamtuf
Idea: build a custom enclosure for a TS100 so you can hold such an iron the way shown.

@qbi @lcamtuf

Mit sowas haben wir also KI gefüttert. Das wird ja noch ein Spaß

@lcamtuf unfortunately you turned out to be a Sith Lord.
@lcamtuf yes, once it starts to melt you can use it to attach components (that’s why you always should have multiple tips, they get used up over time). /s
@lcamtuf you sure you're into soldering and not into blacksmithing?
@lcamtuf I think it might be too cold. Maybe put your finger on it to make sure /j
@lcamtuf Looks good, but the display reads "error".
@lcamtuf Perfect for desoldering big connectors.
@lcamtuf yes. and make sure to hold it like this neocat here
@lcamtuf Glowing 1000 degreee soldering iron vs the sanity of the fediverse
@lcamtuf Only if you're a jedi.

@lcamtuf

Quick!
Hit EZ-5 to insert all the control rods before it goes critical.

@lcamtuf Just 43 °C is not normal, should be hotter. Hence the error, I assume.
@bluestarultor @lcamtuf it says "Error" right there and it sure looks like it's having an error to me so I guess yeah that's normal, nowt to worry about
@lcamtuf Yes, that's totally normal. Your modern soldering iron has a built-in working light to help you better see the components evaporate. It's also perfect for night soldering!
@lcamtuf I don't think your cat is going to like that one bit! 😲
@lcamtuf
I think red-yellow is about 150°K probably I dunno I didant look it up prolly its ok
@lcamtuf I can't tell. Could you move the lightsaber out of the picture and show the soldering iron?
@lcamtuf maybe a decimal error, and it tried for 1500 °C (but only getting to 1000 °C, judging by the orange glow)
