@RecDiffs Fun fact, in 10 years with 2 front-loaders, I’ve never cleaned a seal or had a moldy or even slimy seal. #californiaisnotarealplace
@RecDiffs Regarding Norway’s self-scanning checkout, Sam’s Club has Scan & Go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtSRXW_hC8o
How to Use Sam's Club Scan and Go

@bpk @RecDiffs (I know I'm late to the party, but I just listened to this ep today) ~ many US stores have this. In addition to Sam's, I've personally experienced the phone-based one in New England Big Y (grocery store) and even the handheld-scanner-based one in otherwise-maligned-by @siracusa Stop & Shop.

@RecDiffs interesting discussion on the state of washing appliances in the US of A. We had a top-loader washing machine for 25 years. Its main difference with a front-loader is that the front is closed and the top of the cylinder has a flap that gives access to the cylinder.
(Also 7 years is not old for an appliance. #shocked)

@RecDiffs Hi,
Tip to combat washing-machine stink. We run a load of bedding on 90°C every two weeks to kill all bacteria. Works excellent. Saves on detergent but costs more electricity
@ArjanBos Sadly, our washing machine scum is hardy enough to survive that. We even used special “machine cleaner” products that you run through the machine periodically without any clothes in it. It helps, but it does not eliminate the problem.
@siracusa @ArjanBos the appropriate technology to combat this is just leaving the door open a crack. My sister-in-law has a special device to facilitate this, but over X-mas I noted that my mom's washer (a Whirlpool I think?) has a special detent in the door opening sequence that holds it open 15 or so degrees. All that said, I'm a top-load sympathizer at heart, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
@RecDiffs 2 Massachusetts based grocery stores have been distributing self checkout. Stop & Shop has had the scanners and distributed scales for many years. You can't miss them at the entrances. Big Y fairly recently added app based scan and go - you don't even have to wait in line with your scanner... just scan a QR code near the checkouts (or the pizza register) and pay through the app.
@john @RecDiffs We have the hand scanners in Connecticut Stop & Shops, but (mostly?) only in the nicer towns, and you have to have an affinity account (which means they track your purchases). This is why we do most of our shopping at a store in the next town over (more affluent, more white, has the scanners) rather than the closer one in our town (less affluent, less white, doesn’t). Bagging ourselves as we go is worth it for the big, every-three-weeks trips.
@RecDiffs first saw the self-scanning thing in a Swedish grocery store in 2013 but I've never seen anyone use one there across 5 vacations. We had it in 1 store in by my home (Orange County, CA) for ~6 months and I used it but nobody else seemed to and eventually they were just left inoperable on the rack near the front of the store for a couple months until they were finally removed.

Give yourself the gift of Reconcilable Differences 250, which has a particularly good Follow Up section.

@RecDiffs

@RecDiffs the UK supermarket Waitrose doesn’t even need scanning hardware. You use their app and scan as you go from your phone.

Because we aren’t Norway, occasionally they rescan your basket on checkout to make sure that you didn’t steal anything.

@RecDiffs @siracusa i have a 10+ year old front loader that sits on our covered/screened back porch (old small house) in the oppressive South Florida heat and humidity…no mold. I do run a clean cycle with bleach every 2 weeks or so, and crack the door open when not in use.
