I just can't get over how stupid and fake this is, but what absolutely boggles my mind is how expensive it must be for them to run it.

They're collections of users that one can easily follow all at once, and you don't get any notification that you've been added to one / can't even find out which ones you're in without going to a third-party site that crawls their API.
Obviously this is a perfectly good feature with no problems at all, but, even if it had problems, they wouldn't matter in the face of helping flighty new users build up a busy "following" feed quickly.
