Yesterday three NYU colleagues were arrested supporting and observing a student protest. One of those colleagues is now being told that she may not be able to return to faculty housing.

Other colleagues have been declared personas non grata, and cannot come on campus for any reason, including teaching their classes.

This is anticipatory obedience and it is going to get worse.

@historianess I don't want to heart this 💔

@lavaeolus but please do, just so it reaches more eyeballs.

dinnae fash--we are organizing! :)

@historianess I already boosted!
Hearting doesn't do anything to promote the post... It's just for you - that's why I wrote my message instead :)

@lavaeolus ha, ok :)

It's going to get worse before it gets better though.

@lavaeolus A black and white image shows a logo of a thumb within a circle that has a ring around it, resembling a planet. Underneath the logo, it says "DON'T PANIC" in bold capital letters, followed by "ORGANIZE!" in smaller bold capital letters.

@lavaeolus not panicking yet, but...it's not good.

When I lectured my Berlin students this semester on the fall of the Weimar Republic, the parallels were undeniable...

@historianess I've got this image posted on/at the door of my office :)
It's mainly for others, but also for me
@lavaeolus very important.

@lavaeolus A light brown wooden door has a black-framed piece of tape and two pieces of paper attached to it. The top piece of paper is a black and white reproduction of a painting of a man in robes, accompanied by German text. Below it is a white piece of paper with a black logo — a stylized hand inside a circle with a ring around it — and the text "DON'T PANIC" above "ORGANIZE!". A silver door handle is visible on the left side of the door.

@historianess You boosting this makes me hurry to figure out the correct preposition on/at... :D
@lavaeolus meh same difference! also I fuck up German prepositions (and related cases) on the regular)

@historianess But I've also got a background in linguistics and consider stuff like that fascinating! :D

It should be "on", right?
"to refer to a position on any surface" https://dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/at-on-and-in-place

At, on and in (place)

@lavaeolus I actually think a lot of it is based on dialect. For example, in TX people almost always say "Where [are] you at?" As opposed to "Where are you?" Prepositions very fungible.
@historianess So, I would like some NFPs?
@historianess Non-Fungible-Prepositions (as in NFTs *brrr*🥶)
@lavaeolus ah hahahahah I don't know if there is such a thing! All prepositions fungible and subject to colloquial use!
@historianess Can't I get a receipt in some wildly destructiv and inefficient distributed ledger?
With a 'smart' contract: "This preposition can only be used by me."

@historianess @lavaeolus

Go directly north from TX, past the 49th parallel, and you'll hear "Can I come with?"

Before you say 'you' is implied (true), there are also other potential answers. Some of which are pretty funny.

@lavaeolus @historianess That's an interesting one because both apply. "On" fits best as it is attached to the door itself, while "at" does work, though it includes things attached to the wall, window, or otherwise in the vicinity of the door and, because "on" is more specific, "at" slightly implies it isn't attached to the door. If you absolutely must appear or be a native speaker it's "on," but otherwise it's more than clear enough and shouldn't matter.

@StarkRG I don't have to be/appear a native speaker :)
Like I said here, I consider stuff like that fascinating:
https://fedihum.org/@lavaeolus/113646778097798860

In German (my first language) it is simply "an", kinda combining the meaning of "on" and "at".

@lavaeolus @historianess I agree, it is fascinating (as long as there's no value judgement involved).

@StarkRG The tiny linguist inside me is decidedly a descriptivist, not a normativist! :D

"Tiny", because my BA has been a few years ago...

@historianess Here’s a blog post I just published that is somewhat relevant, https://heidi-says.ghost.io/the-american-legal-academy-obeying-in-advance/ @lavaeolus
The American legal academy obeying in advance

As far as I know, the only institutional reaction from American law schools to federal results from 2024 election has been to tell foreign law students to get to campus before Trump's inauguration, part of broader warnings from universities and colleges. I can find no record of law schools holding

Yeah, the book-burning thing in Florida was setting a lot of people's radars to "Wait, I've heard this before.."

And it's just devolved ever since.

@historianess Between Columbia and NYU, I've never been more embarrassed to be from NYC in my life. Just disgraceful behavior from these institutions.

@historianess Doing what they did has the intent of ultimately getting arrested. It's a long-standing process of nonviolent protest.

Now the university's response is what I question. Is there a clause in the contracts that make arrest an issue with teaching? It seems overly harsh and troublesome.

@historianess

thank you for sharing - what a wreck of things.

shame pox plus more on those making these policies

@historianess

Why in the world would a college freshman want to attend NYU?

There are other universities that aren't MAGA.

@historianess

Is there any media coverage of this? I'd like to read an article about this. Like, of course, being the wrong word. Thank you for linking something if it's out there.

@cindyweinstein @historianess And if there isn’t, please speak to the press. This is heartbreaking and frustrating.
@holly @cindyweinstein @historianess There's a link to an article in a later post to the thread, but since you weren't tagged I wanted to make sure you saw it: https://mastodon.social/@edwardchampion/113652200875124267

As @historianess has pointed out, the "obey in advance" brigade is already out in full force at NYU. Three NYU faculty have been told that they are "persona non grata," which means that they cannot enter any university buildings, including their own classrooms and faculty housing. This is not only an assault on free speech, but it is a disturbing wave of anti-intellectualism that will only calcify.

@edwardchampion @historianess

That kind of thing makes me wonder if a university's accreditation should be yanked.
Suddenly getting rid of faculty in the middle of a teaching term undermines their academic capacity.
