Why would you do this.
@stroughtonsmith to keep the mystery alive!
But also…. Yay! They’re going to talk more about the laundry alerts!
@stroughtonsmith maybe to annoy the Germans who seem to care the most about podcast chapters. cc: @siracusa @caseyliss @marcoarment
@Alphacheez @siracusa @caseyliss @marcoarment …does everybody else listen to a podcast start to finish, in order, in a single sitting? 😅 I pick and choose chapters to listen to while I walk the dog

@stroughtonsmith @Alphacheez @siracusa @caseyliss @marcoarment er yes, it’s a sauna for the mind

Ooh I’m going with that

@stroughtonsmith @Alphacheez @siracusa @caseyliss @marcoarment (I appear to have extended my own analogy that if Apple is a church, ATP is the jesuits … and Steve was the most clear-sighted of many prophets)
@whophd @stroughtonsmith @Alphacheez I rarely actually skip a chapter, but chapters to give me a sense of “is this three more minutes about why Marco’s latest unnecessary purchase was probably a mistake, or twenty-five?” Helps me plan for how zoned out I can be, I suppose.

@chucker @stroughtonsmith @Alphacheez Yep. For me, it’s super handy for the times I choose it for sleep-listening — finding your place is, as yet, an unsolved technology problem

Generally though it’s cycle-touring-exercise

@stroughtonsmith I don't do it in one sitting but I'm listening to ATP while cooking and just stop mid-sentence when I'm done and pick it up again next time I'm cooking (with seeking back 5 or so secs). Chapters are nice for me to know where I was but I don't actively seek with them. (Yes, I'm German 😂)
@stroughtonsmith @Alphacheez @siracusa @caseyliss @marcoarment I’m a completionist so, it’s mad to me that you skip around. So many jokes go with the flow and you’d miss them. I simply can’t with the way you listen. Gahhhh.

@stroughtonsmith what madness is this!? How do you keep track of which chapter you haven’t listened to? This would terrify me (I’m a completionist).

I use chapters to skip a chapter I’m not interested in (which happens rarely).

@stroughtonsmith @Alphacheez @siracusa @caseyliss @marcoarment I have no idea if I’m in the norm or not, but I listen to most episodes of the podcasts I listen to from start to finish. I listen at 1x and I don’t skip ads (although I do subscribe to a few to get no ads). I don’t usually listen in one sitting. I always listen when doing something else: driving somewhere, building LEGO, putting away laundry, mowing the lawn, etc. I very rarely do nothing but listen to an episode.
@Alphacheez @stroughtonsmith @siracusa @caseyliss @marcoarment I’m not German and I very much care about them, and would like it a lot if every podcast I listen to used them

@stroughtonsmith Because it’s fun! Don’t be a curmudgeon. :)

(Wasn’t my work, but I wish it was!)

@caseyliss you know people use chapters for navigation, right? They're not just decorative 😅 Would you replace all the labels in your apps with emoji on April fools?

…actually don't answer that 😂

I'm glad I don't have to rely on VoiceOver

@stroughtonsmith with respect, I think you’re getting unnecessarily grumpy about a one-time gag.

If it becomes a regular thing, then sure, kvetch all you want. But it won’t.

Let people have fun. :)

@caseyliss @stroughtonsmith I take it as a lighthearted joke, but my kindly meant feedback is that I simply don't listen to this episode because I always "prepare" podcasts like this beforehand by deactivating chapters that I don't find interesting. And yes, the joke is disproportionately at the expense of people who can now have endless emoji names read out to them.
@jakif @stroughtonsmith I actually thought this was a really solid episode, but if that’s the way you like to roll, power to you. Our silly podcast should never feel like an obligation/burden so if it helped to skip this one, great! :)
@caseyliss @stroughtonsmith I really didn't want to cause any offence. As a long-time listener of your podcast, I just wanted to give some honest feedback. I'm certainly not your core target group and I listen to too many podcasts and have too many interests. To do justice to this, chapter markers, playback speed etc. are important to me. (1/2)
And as someone from the CivicTech sector, whose customers were "at best all", I simply have a high awareness of accessibility. I like your podcast and I'm not looking for a fight, word of honour! ☺️ (2/2)

@jakif @caseyliss @stroughtonsmith TIL I’m weird for listening to podcasts at 1x from beginning to end.

1. How do you people watch TV? Is everything a Benny Hill chase scene?
2. How do you people read books? Just the chapters whose titles you like?

@pvanb @caseyliss @stroughtonsmith Interesting comparison. I wouldn't consume fictional literature or series like that either, correct. Do you read every article on a news site? For me, the podcast medium is partly information processing and partly recreational. ATP is a news podcast with anecdotal humour, not a drama in three acts.

@pvanb @jakif 1) ‘watch TV’? TV shows, often on YouTube or Twitch, at 1.25 or 1.5x speed. 2) I listen to books… at 1.5x

Podcasts are 90% filler and ads. Fine if you have nothing else to do, but if I'm doing something like cook or walk the dog, which has a specific duration, I want to pick the topics that fit. I'm not 'sitting down to listen to a podcast’ in that case

@stroughtonsmith @jakif I certainly skip over the filler, but never feel the need to rush through to finish by a certain time. I don’t mind picking up episodes later where I left off, even if I’m listening during chores/commuting/etc.
@caseyliss I for one had fun try to guess what the next chapters were about. And in a couple instances I even thought I would have done a better job picking emojis, which made me feel

@caseyliss

The emoji showed up in Apple CarPlay and I quite enjoyed them. I don’t usually look at my podcast - I guess I ignore it while driving - so now I’ll notice chapter titles more.

@caseyliss @stroughtonsmith yes, goodness guys it’s a one time joke. Lots of us find it funny. Let them have some fun.
@caseyliss @stroughtonsmith also, with respect to the podcast team, ATP is not thaaaaaaat important and loads of shows don’t even have chapter markers at all. Let them have some silly fun ;)
@caseyliss @stroughtonsmith It’s a shame the world seems to be losing its sense of humour… 🤪
@stroughtonsmith Some people just want to watch the world burn.
@stroughtonsmith Listen at 1.25x? Good question, that’s a bit much. 😜
@stroughtonsmith Some people just want to watch the world burn…
@stroughtonsmith lol. i almost never look at their chapters, but i did yesterday. it's an affront to all things decent as a an index, but it does look ok when you're on the playing screen (ymmv, depending on the app)
