In @Vivaldi, we provide a set of search engine choices. It differs a bit from country to country, but generally we have a nice set of search engines to choose from.

I would advice that you select one of the smaller search engines. They are generally better when it comes to privacy and you are supporting an alternative to Big Tech, although most of them get their search feeds from either Google or Microsoft at this time. That also means that switching from Google or Bing will allow you to get similar search results, while stepping away from Big Tech, so the switching cost should be lower.

So what is your favorite search engine?

@jon I know it's paid so maybe that makes it a bit of problem. But I switched to @kagihq and honestly haven't looked back.
@jon @Vivaldi Searching directly on wikipedia is surprisingly effective at getting at information – as opposed to content farms cashing in from showing ads.

@albertcardona @Vivaldi

There is a reason why we include Wikipedia as well. It is good for many things. So is adding vertical search engines, which is easy to do in Vivaldi. You can then access them all quickly through the search engine shortcuts.

@jon @Vivaldi Thank you. Another one would be to search directly into the wayback machine of the webarchive.

@albertcardona @Vivaldi

You can add that as well. You have to add it manually, but I tested it and it works well.

@albertcardona @jon @Vivaldi I do this when I want to know about someone or something named, which is a big chunk of what would otherwise be general web searches. I go directly to the Wikipedia app on my phone, and it's a far better scanning / reading experience most of the time.
@jon @Vivaldi I really like Ecosia. I find that the results are still good and I feel good about supporting a company that is trying to make a positive change for the environment.

@jon @Vivaldi I voted #DuckDuckGo because it's the one I use but it's not ideal, they've added ads and "AI" recently and you can't remove a word from search (using "-" which works on google or at least used to).
Might try Ecosia next but is it really environmentally-friendly? It does look like green washing a bit..

#SearchEngines

@elduvelle @Vivaldi

Coming from Iceland, where we are all urged to plant trees, a search engine that plants trees is a good thing.

@jon @Vivaldi always use Goosle.

@arnan @Vivaldi

Maybe time to try something else? Having choices is a good thing.

A quick way to get an AI-free search without any extra work.

@jon @Vivaldi I have to mention @clew here. Even though it's smaller and just recently started, what it lacks in quantity it makes up in quality.
@sunarch @jon @Vivaldi @clew Good shout Sunarch, a great search engine (it's having a redesign atm using all the devs learning from the first itteration to make it better).

@orbitalmartian @sunarch @jon @Vivaldi

Yep! If you want to see what's currently up I just published the latest dev blog post:

The New Ariadne Architecture

While on a fourteen-hour international flight, I finally managed to come up with an architecture for Clew's web crawler that I'm happy with. Here's the run-down.

@jon @Vivaldi

in the beginning of this year, I'd say DDG ... but nowadays, I'm less convinced of it. It feels like I'm ending up in just another search bubble again.

I'm been testing out Qwant a little bit. But not convinced yet.

Yahoo, Google and Startpage is out of the question for me. I don't trust either of them in regards to privacy. I would like to add Bing to this not-wanted list, but that implicitly impacts DDG.

@jon @Vivaldi, apart of Andi as main search (it's philosophy and ethics me remember a lot of the ones of Vivaldi, despite using AI), I use Startpage, mainly for images, Mojeek and some other specific ones. I don't use Google search since at least 10 years, nor Bing, which anyway don't have so reliable results.
@jon @Vivaldi I use Exodus as my default, but I use Google once in a while if I need a really quick search result
@jon @Vivaldi I am currently really enjoying Kagi.
@jon Other: brave search seems to work decent
@jon @Vivaldi Engines or Proxies?
@jon @Vivaldi I use the Ecosia search because Ecosia GmbH invests 80 percent of its profits in tree plantations worldwide. And Vivaldi and Eosia have a partnership. Privacy is also very important.
@jon @Vivaldi It is also great to configure own searches with search parameters for the context search in the settings (sorry, screenshots with German text).
@jon @Vivaldi @Mojeek @brave brave search as well as mojeek are good options.
@jon, @Vivaldi, what do you think of Monocles (monocles.de)? It is an EU based search engine.
@jon @Vivaldi I selected DuckDuckGo, but I try to use Mojeek as much as possible. I think Europe should have its own search engine, and stop relying on the American Big Tech. But I do prefer DuckDuckGo :)
@jon @Vivaldi Paid, private search engine @kagihq has changed the game! It feels like the best days of Google, maybe even better!
@jcrabapple @jon @Vivaldi @kagihq Way too expensive. $120/year for unlimited search. I pay less than $80/year for a domain with unlimited storage and 10 sql servers.
This pricing could be popular in USA/UK/FR/DE, where people pays $10 for a daily coffee. But I pay $0.60 for mine.
@jcrabapple @jon @Vivaldi @kagihq Kagi para mim é inviável, 10 dólares por mês é o equivalente a 60 reais, quase 5% do salário mínimo do Brasil.

@jon @Vivaldi Easy: alltheweb.com but since that disappeared it all went to sh#t.

The problem nowdays is to filter out the wast amount autogenerated junk pages from any search result. SEO has killed search.

@jon @Vivaldi Startpage for primary (better Mandarin search result) and secondary DuckduckGo
@jon @Vivaldi I have three favorites, but Google and Bing are NOT among them!
@jon I voted for Ecosia because that's what I had been on for several years now but recent weeks I have been using Kagi as someone here gave me access to Kagi membership (Thanksgiving offer) and i tell you what its growing on me. When I was on Ecosia I use to occasionally search Google through incognito to get the result i was looking for but I no longer feel the need! Kagi is good, really good!
@jon @Vivaldi Kagi. No ads, no spam and spot on results (and offers real useful filtering tools when needed).
@jon @Vivaldi The independent search index of brave is my favourite, Mojeek and metager notable other search engines.
Unfortunately searx instances seem to be regularly blocked by the index providers.
@jon @Vivaldi
SearX-ng. Good compilation of search from various search systems.

Seriously though. I've had a good couple of years using it so far (search results, that is).

@jon @Vivaldi I started trialling @kagihq a few weeks ago and subscribed just a few days ago.

I was motivated to find a good paid service after reading the story of Neeva. I loved the idea of a search engine that was not motivated to make me see ads.

Prior, I used @duckduckgo, but found myself frequently re-searching with Google because the results were not as relevant.

@jon @Vivaldi I'd love to see a default option for @kagihq. It's been my search engine of choice for a year and is worth the $.
@jon @Vivaldi If you consider the overwhelming majority of people who use Google search, this result unfortunately also shows what a small bubble we are in here.

@UserMicha @Vivaldi

Not a bubble, just a nice place. We must invite more people to join us.

@jon @Vivaldi
Thanks for this. I did not know of the smaller SE like ecosia. Used it today and for the first time in years I received real results beyond just amazon and big Box store linked nonsense. 😉
