Reason number 563 why I love reading books... 📚 There are no commercials!

And the way things are going, commericals just might be coming into books.
@davevolek @breadandcircuses At least targeted ads are unlikely in hardcover books. 😅

Back in the 70s some US publishers inserted ads in paperback books. The ads were printed on cardstock and bound into the center of the book. Here's an example pulled at random off the bookshelf.

And an ad for cigarettes to boot!

The good old days.

@davevolek @catselbow @breadandcircuses Ah, I just posted my own photos of those, but I couldn't find any examples with the inserts like cigarette ads.
@catselbow @davevolek @breadandcircuses yeah I remember them too, and I still have some of those in my vintage sf paperback collection!
@davevolek @breadandcircuses Paperbacks in the pulp fiction days used to have cardboard insert ads, or ads in the back for other books. I can't find any of the inserts right now, but here are a couple of the ads at the end.

Maybe this is one reason to ban books. No advertising. Or ineffective advertising. That doesn't fit the corporate agenda.

I do click on Mastodon links--and sometimes go to websites with more ads than text (and sometimes interesting text).

Yep, I can see why we need to ban books.

@breadandcircuses I do own books containing ads though…

it's rare, but it does (or did) exist

For a fun spin on this, "Feed" by M.T. Anderson was a good YA read.

@breadandcircuses that is, unless you read the popular American novels by John Sandford. Talk about product placement…!
@breadandcircuses Whats ur favorite books?
@breadandcircuses Very recently accepted my addiction to video gaming and got a 12 step program and book and im reading that and its helping me to see other things out there including reading as a fun thing to do.

@breadandcircuses

Shhh! They’ll find a way!

@breadandcircuses man. All these years I've felt there was something missing but I could never put my finger on it. To be fair some books in back have ads from their publisher about other books and authors you might want to read. Back in the day some even had order forms in the back.

Mmm... Some kindles have invisibly tiny lights all over the screen that enable reading in the dark quite comfortably. Brightness can be adjusted in very small increments so the light is just the right amount. No paper book can do that.
@dancingtreefrog @breadandcircuses @SpaceLifeForm And you can save them when they're on danger of ending in the dustbin... 😅
