Anyone thinking of switching to #Linux as #Windows continues to circle the drain, I can't recommend @kde enough. I switched to #Kubuntu a few months ago and #Plasma is the most professional, consistent and stable Linux environment I've used. I've set up a monthly donation, despite not having bought software for over a decade, because it's actually worth paying for. 🙂
@knightlie @kde I would only recommend Kubuntu if you can deal with the annoying snap packages (and are willing to install flatpak post-installation) and are willing to upgrade to every non LTS version. Kubuntu 24.04 is on a super old version of Qt and KDE Plasma that has been abandoned upstream and is only supported (for now) until 2027), and 24.10 has Plasma 6.1 (which is a massive upgrade over 24.04's Plasma 5.27), but you have to upgrade every 9 months, which can be annoying.
@knightlie @kde If you're willing to try something a little bit "riskier" with KDE apps and Plasma, try Tuxedo OS (Ubuntu based but it has much newer KDE Plasma and kernel versions than Ubuntu 24.04 as well as snaps purged with flatpak support added), or even @fedora KDE (once Fedora 42 comes out, it will have the same "Workstation Edition" status as the GNOME version) if you know about RPMFusion to get codec support back and don't need XOrg support for legacy X11 session support.
@knightlie (X11 apps will still run on Fedora 41 and later, but they will run on Wayland via XWayland, which is nothing seriously horrible and almost all of those apps will run, it's just that Wayland is not great for accessibility, older than Maxwell Nvidia GPU users, and a few other niche use cases at the moment.)
@cameronbosch @kde I don't use Snaps unless there's absolutely no other choice, and flatpak didn't take too much to set up. I did try KDE Neon but found it really unreliable.

@knightlie @kde Tuxedo OS is much more up to date while still being Ubuntu based. Did you try it?

I agree on KDE Neon being unstable though.

@cameronbosch @kde I’m happy with Kubuntu 24.10 so far, but I did set it up so switching distros is a bit easier so I may look at Tuxedo later.

@knightlie @kde Good idea! It's always good to try new distros!

Tuxedo OS is a great distro.

@knightlie @kde

There can't be many distributions of Linux that don't have fans! I'm happily relying on Mint with Cinnamon on my big computer, and it seems to be wonderfully reliable.

@knightlie @kde I’m not even a KDE user, but have a monthly donation set up anyway. A very important project!
@knightlie @kde Yeah, It is really great, powerful and stable DE, you couldn't hit better :)
@knightlie @kde Kubuntu 24.10 was very nice, good to have them on Plasma 6!
@zappor @kde yeah, I’m really impressed with how polished Plasma 6 is, and runs like a dream on my tiny no-name mini PC.
@knightlie @kde I’ve tried most of the DE’s in recent years and I always come back to KDE. Mate is a big draw to me but Debian Mate lacks the polish that KDE offers.
@The_Homer_Simpson @kde I have Mint Mate running on my media server and wasn't impressed at all. The UI is very primitive, and I have to reboot it regularly as it becomes unstable. That might be the 30-odd Docker containers though, lol.
@knightlie @kde 30??! Lol wow I think my machine would melt 😂

@knightlie @kde

100% agree. I didn’t know what was missing until I gave #bazzite a try.

Now now matter what distro I go to in the future (assuming I don’t stay on Bazzite) KDE is definitely going to be involved.

On the Win -> Nix migration subject, I appreciate how many of my most used keyboard shortcuts are there by default in KDE which aren’t there on Gnome.
