GOP dominated Texas school board approves curriculum that incorporates Bible lessons for K-5 classes.

This is Christian nationalism & it is an existential threat to our republic. It seeks to revive the white supremacist foundings of this country & it is a huge mistake to underestimate its danger.

@QasimRashid I can't wait to see how the Supreme Court contorts the law to somehow allow this.
@ocdtrekkie @QasimRashid I kinda doubt they will. Rather they'll have courts ruling that the usual plaintiffs (advocacy orgs) don't have standing and terrorizing parents who actually would have clear standing not to rock the boat.
@QasimRashid We need adamant parents fighting this who are brave enough to word this as "you will not teach my child your rapist-worshipping religion".
@QasimRashid I really need to write a longform piece on this, but the mainstream Christian interpretation of the Christian god has him as a RAPIST and anyone who wants to be Christian without worshipping evil needs to confront this and come to terms with an interpretation they can reconcile with human values.

@QasimRashid

Then I have hope that the pupils can extract some good moral and ethics out if the scriptures at least, which can have a common ground across religious beliefs. Starting with «love your neighbour as yourself» and the golden rule.

Hopefully this can grow respect, kindness to others and end up more inclusive. Because the GOP doesn't look like good role models for the kids anyhow nowadays.

But I also fear that too many of the teachers will rather twist the messages in the gospel to fit the GOP agenda. I just hope the kids will be able see beyond that and question the teachers.

Some might believe the kids are too young to grasp this. But I wouldn't underestimate them.

@dazo @QasimRashid Hippie Jesus, for the win.

@dazo
That's not how the right likes to read and interpret the bible.

And the bible (of you chose the right edition) is thick enough that you can find nearly sentences of any meaning just by crossing out enough woke words in between the right ones.
@QasimRashid

@yacc143 @QasimRashid Maybe more should read the bible and point out the abusive interpretations GOP takes, so they don't get easily away with it 😉
@QasimRashid #GOP read the #constitution like they read #Bible, ignoring the 99.9% that they don’t agree with and fixating on one or two unrepresentative passages.
@QasimRashid Paying public schools a per-pupil bonus to teach #christian nationalism, ala #Texas, will really take off after the #gop burns federal #education funding to the ground. #resistance #FightChristianNationalism

@QasimRashid I think this is all a distraction. The common thread of school vouchers, parochial school choice, charter schools, eliminating ed depart standards, breaking teacher unions is providing lower quality education while defunding public schools.

This Christian versus freedom of religion is just another way to let groups fight while destroying education for the public.

#education

@QasimRashid
You definitely have that right.

@QasimRashid

Tank you for your post.

Please continue to speak your mind. Truth (not GOP truth) must prevail

Peace

@QasimRashid
Not to mention that it spreads ignorance and hate by incorporating fairy tales as fact.
@QasimRashid Good luck getting anyone to care until after the barn has burned now. No one has listened to me and I raised the alarm about this with charter schools over 20 years ago. It was extremely predictable that's what they were aiming for. And to get around the 'bussing' of affirmative action.
@QasimRashid
Well we do have religion classes in school (which the pupils can opt out, at age 14 themselves, before via their parents). OTOH it's religion, so there are classes for all recognized religions (Catholic, protestants, Muslim I think the suni variant are nowadays usually onsite at the school in normal sized schools, others off-site), but then our priests don't try to preach bull shit like creationism. They are rather on the fundaments of science and how it interacts with religion.
@QasimRashid Are there standardized tests connected with this bullshit? If not, then a lot of it's never going to get done. Maybe.
@QasimRashid even the founders of the US weren't evangelical nutters. Some were deists which weren't even Christian. We are literally going against what the founding fathers enshrined in the constitution
