Parliament suspended as Maori reps perform Haka.
Fuck yeah!
Parliament suspended as Maori reps perform Haka.
Fuck yeah!
Just imagine THAT in German parliament 😆
@qwertzalotl
Yeah.
I'm afraid it would be some schuhplattler. 🙈
My best buddy at work participated in a haka-workshop. He learned that everybody is allowed to create his/her own hakas to connect to your inner self and to empower yourself. It's fascinating.
But a Schuhplattler every single time someone from the #noafd tries to speak sounds tempting!
New Zealand’s parliament was briefly suspended on Thursday after Maori members staged a haka to disrupt the vote on a contentious bill that would reinterpret a 184-year-old treaty between the British and Indigenous Maori.
So my understanding from the article is that this was just first reading and it is expected to fail after this, but Maori people are still protesting massively. This is fabulous… we should all aim to be this demanding and disruptive even for threats that are only theoretical or performative.
“Hundreds have set out on a nine-day march”
@jcrabapple @Nixie @tamonten @zebratale
I’m glad to see a people who take threats seriously whether they are imminent or long-term, likely or unlikely.
Would you say the same if it were Republicans in the US ripping abortion rights?
This *is* how Republicans have been, we need to fight back with the same proactive vigor.
Let’s be clear what is being ‘legitimized’ here: a brief interruption of parliamentary process to protest an attack against them as a people, and a protest march and demonstration.
These *are* tools of protest - always have been - and without them, we sit quietly on our hands while injustice is done, and that seems worse to me.
Demands for ‘civility’ can be a form of oppression too.
@nanosekunde
Different things are different, troll.
An act of sovereignty. Wonderful.

@dyedbird @jcrabapple It's interesting when you watch other videos, like from news, that show more context leading up. The Speaker looks thoroughly grumpy as he loses control of the room. But interestingly, that white dude you mention and the other white people on that side of the room (not on the other) stand when the Māori MP begins the haka. My impression is that they are in the parties supporting her (opposing the measure) and stand in respect.
Just my impression, though. I could be wrong!
@aehdeschaine @dyedbird You've seen it correctly - left-wing parties have seats on the left side, and the three nearest the Te Pati Māori members, standing at the front, are from the Green Party and in full support. (The man is Ricardo Menéndez March, who isn't always afforded white-passing privilege.)
The racist little maggot who introduced this rubbish bill is briefly visible on the right as the camera pans out at the end.
@rhamphorhynchus Thank you! I looked up the chart and tried to figure it out. I also really appreciated the person next to Menéndez March who kept trying to speak. I presume there was coordination before the vote, but the solidarity stands out as much as the haka itself, to me (but then I'm in the US).
I've watched some speeches, and the bill guy's was quite slimy. I do hope it's true that the other right-wing parties won't support it further. Cheering for clear, non-racist minds to prevail!
#Democrats don't need to appropriate the #Haka - just use that kind of power/energy in #Resistance to #Fascist #MAGAts in #Congress
@jcrabapple
This is what it was about

This. is . amazing!!!
Absolutely amazing. A powerful message to those trying to dismantle the treaty. Well done.

Maori Haka
"Traditionally, haka was a customary way to welcome visiting tribes, but it also served to invigorate warriors as they headed into battle. It was a show of physical prowess but also an embodiment of cultural pride, strength, and unity."
