Parliament suspended as Maori reps perform Haka.

Fuck yeah!

@jcrabapple my new favorite parliamentary procedure
@jcrabapple
I love the energy but what the hell did i just watch? 😅
@RnDanger search your favorite search engine for "haka" - it's a traditional dance. @jcrabapple
This is awesome!
It seems that there was a dismissal of something, as it was ripped apart in the beginning. What an impact!
Love it!

@Easydor

Just imagine THAT in German parliament 😆

@qwertzalotl
Yeah.
I'm afraid it would be some schuhplattler. 🙈

My best buddy at work participated in a haka-workshop. He learned that everybody is allowed to create his/her own hakas to connect to your inner self and to empower yourself. It's fascinating.

@Easydor

@qwertzalotl

But a Schuhplattler every single time someone from the #noafd tries to speak sounds tempting!

@jcrabapple OMFG LET’s GOOOOOOOOOO!
@jcrabapple This is f’in baller.
@tamonten @jcrabapple Can I get some context? (I mean, suspending parliament isn't kinda bad?, this may be a.mistranslation on my part, too)
New Zealand MPs disrupt parliament with haka to protest Indigenous treaty bill

New Zealand’s parliament was briefly suspended on Thursday after Maori members staged a haka to disrupt the vote on a contentious bill that would reinterpret a 184-year-old treaty between the British and Indigenous Maori.

CNN

@tamonten @jcrabapple @Nixie

So my understanding from the article is that this was just first reading and it is expected to fail after this, but Maori people are still protesting massively. This is fabulous… we should all aim to be this demanding and disruptive even for threats that are only theoretical or performative.

“Hundreds have set out on a nine-day march”

@DavidM_yeg @tamonten @jcrabapple @Nixie the toxic Atlas Network muppet who introduced this bill is playing a long divisive game to further disenfranchise the indigenous people of Aotearoa. It's a play for access to resources currently out of reach of extractive industries. Even when the legislation fails to pass, it lays the foundation for future erosion. Over the last 50 years smart people have analysed and negotiated a common understanding of Te Tiriti and this hoha claims he knows better.

@jcrabapple @Nixie @tamonten @zebratale

I’m glad to see a people who take threats seriously whether they are imminent or long-term, likely or unlikely.

@DavidM_yeg @tamonten @Nixie

Would you say the same if it were Republicans in the US ripping abortion rights?

@tamonten @nanosekunde @Nixie

This *is* how Republicans have been, we need to fight back with the same proactive vigor.

@DavidM_yeg @tamonten @Nixie
I don't know. That's kind of legitimises their behaviour and I don't want give them that angle to attack.

@nanosekunde

Let’s be clear what is being ‘legitimized’ here: a brief interruption of parliamentary process to protest an attack against them as a people, and a protest march and demonstration.

These *are* tools of protest - always have been - and without them, we sit quietly on our hands while injustice is done, and that seems worse to me.

Demands for ‘civility’ can be a form of oppression too.

@tamonten @Nixie

@jcrabapple looks like that's going well then 😌

@jcrabapple

An act of sovereignty. Wonderful.

@katzenberger @jcrabapple
Would you say the same if it were Republicans in the US ripping abortion rights ?
@jcrabapple @nellie_m Honestly, I’d be delighted if this sort of passion and pride were displayed in our politics. Much respect ✊🏻

Meanwhile where I live!

@jcrabapple

@jcrabapple I'm white and I loved seeing this. I'm So fucking sick of white people doing white shit everywhere. Power to the natives!
@jcrabapple
Underbart....👌👉✌
@jcrabapple it looks as if the white dude in the front row is pissing in his pants and looking around and hoping no one notices it!

@dyedbird @jcrabapple It's interesting when you watch other videos, like from news, that show more context leading up. The Speaker looks thoroughly grumpy as he loses control of the room. But interestingly, that white dude you mention and the other white people on that side of the room (not on the other) stand when the Māori MP begins the haka. My impression is that they are in the parties supporting her (opposing the measure) and stand in respect.

Just my impression, though. I could be wrong!

@aehdeschaine @jcrabapple yeah full disclosure: my comment was totally whimsical and based on zero knowledge of New Zealand politics and the bill that caused this protest by the indigenous people. Chances are my perception is just that a perception...
@dyedbird @jcrabapple Oh, mine too! I know of the issue but have absolutely no knowledge of how NZ parliamentary procedure works. I just thought it was interesting to observe, even beyond how invigorating the haka is

@aehdeschaine @dyedbird You've seen it correctly - left-wing parties have seats on the left side, and the three nearest the Te Pati Māori members, standing at the front, are from the Green Party and in full support. (The man is Ricardo Menéndez March, who isn't always afforded white-passing privilege.)

The racist little maggot who introduced this rubbish bill is briefly visible on the right as the camera pans out at the end.

@rhamphorhynchus Thank you! I looked up the chart and tried to figure it out. I also really appreciated the person next to Menéndez March who kept trying to speak. I presume there was coordination before the vote, but the solidarity stands out as much as the haka itself, to me (but then I'm in the US).

I've watched some speeches, and the bill guy's was quite slimy. I do hope it's true that the other right-wing parties won't support it further. Cheering for clear, non-racist minds to prevail!

@jcrabapple I would dearly love to see Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren try this. I know it'd be appropriation. I know Chuck and Liz might tear some ligaments. I still want it very much

@PizzaDemon @jcrabapple

#Democrats don't need to appropriate the #Haka - just use that kind of power/energy in #Resistance to #Fascist #MAGAts in #Congress

@jcrabapple Can we elect some of them to the US Congress?

@jcrabapple

This. is . amazing!!!

@jcrabapple When something like this happens, as a white dude I would never try to follow the dance because it's not mine, but I would still want to make some sort of demonstration of my support of them.
@jcrabapple Dear Maori members of New Zealand parliament, thank you for showing us what we need to do to the US congress to help rid ourselves of our shitty republican overloads. #haka
@jcrabapple omg can we get some of THIS energy pls

@jcrabapple

Absolutely amazing. A powerful message to those trying to dismantle the treaty. Well done.
