NASA’s Juno spacecraft launched in 2011. It’s studying Jupiter. This is one of many new images it sent back.

I’m blown away at how stunning it is.

This is a really large version of it. Open it up in a new tab or save it to your photos or whatever, so you can zoom in and see it in detail. Just take a break from the world’s sorrow to enjoy this delight.

Juno - Jupiter Missions - NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Launch and mission summary for NASA's Juno Mission to Jupiter, which will help reveal the origin and evolution of Jupiter as well as our solar system.

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
@markwyner that is truly majestic
@kumarvibe you tell no lies. I spent some time just gazing at it.
@markwyner Elon so obsessed with lame boring mars we should be going here instead
@markwyner Also many more awesome images available on the Mission website: https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/junocam/processing?featured=1

Can you send a link to this image?
@funtoomen @markwyner seconded. I cannot find the original in the gallery.
@szakib @funtoomen @markwyner Thirded, the image on mastodon isn't that big and I'd love to zoom into some of that detail, but I can't find it in the gallery.

@McNeely @akkana @szakib @funtoomen

Awesome. Thanks for digging that up, McNeely.

I also couldn’t find the original image in the mission galleries. I originally saw it on the NASA Instagram.

I did post a large version, but it’s possible some Mastodon clients reduce the size.

@McNeely @szakib @funtoomen @markwyner Darn it, that just gives me the general photos page, page 1 of 22.

Does it have a "Share link"? That seems to give a URL that goes straight to a specific image.

As a "scientist", just imagine the forces at work to cause so much atmospheric disturbance over a planet of that size. 😱
#Jupiter #NASA #photos.

@markwyner Awesome, thanks.

Everyone needs to be reminded there are still mysteries, and beauty, all around us.

Where can I get a copy of the whole thing?

TIA

@hdrinehart that’s the shot. I didn’t crop it. You can find a whole bunch of shots on the mission website. Here’s a link to a gallery that includes this one:

@markwyner thanks, brother, have a good whatever where you are.
@markwyner It looks like a Dali painting! The disintegration of the persistence of Jupiter, lol…
@markwyner Why does it put me in mind of something Michaelangelo might have painted?
@markwyner Here's the gallery, for anyone who wants to go the direct route: https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/junocam/processing?featured=1 😊

@markwyner It looks like a lot of storms are going there.

@nlupo 100%. They have some cool galleries and info on the Jupiter section of the NASA site:

Jupiter

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun, and the largest in the solar system – more than twice as massive as the other planets combined.

NASA Science

@markwyner

Just an extraordinary achievement for humanity, to work together and uncover the secrets of a distant planet. And in such exquisite detail.

@ewen Meanwhile, others think they can just aim a town-sized ballistic missile at Mars, and - voila! - they have saved humanity...

@markwyner

@ewen I use "town-sized"as my descriptor here, because our American friends refuse to adopt the internationally recognised metric system. Instead, they chose to measure things in 'eyelashes', 'thumbnails', 'grapefruits', and 'large boulders', when many of them have never encountered either grapefruits or large boulders.

I'm just trying to help.

@markwyner

@ghost_shit @markwyner

:)

We're allowed to maintain a sense of humour on our journey to save the planet from sociopaths. Indeed, it's an essential element to our future success.

@ewen Without a sense of humour - be it gallows-based or otherwise - I might as well wish my family all the best, and drink a bottle of bleach.
