Ars Technica
@arstechnica #Nostalgia just pours in when I think about 90s tech experiences. This was definitely one of them. I didn't have access to #AOL in my country, but I did get those CDs in the @PCMag and other tech mags. I remember AOL setup files on Celine Dions 1997 Lets Talk About Love album. RIP.

He also did the modem scream noise, before that it was just the 300 baud dual tone.
@FritzAdalis @arstechnica 🤣 I needed that today thank you so much

@arstechnica slightly irritated because the "You've got mail" was a female voice in german AOL. Luckily she's still alive and active:

For english speakers: scroll down to "AOL-Stimme" and press play.

@arstechnica R.I.P.

The "goodbye" one for some odd reason scared the šŸ’© out of me as a little kid; I don't know why, but it did!

@arstechnica didn't he spend like, the rest of his life in poverty?
It's such a shame with how he didn't even get paid for the job that made him famous.
Rip.

@arstechnica

That a 74-year old worked as an Uber driver sounds like something out of 1990s Russia. Pensions got devalued by the system change.

I'm going to guess he didn't do it as an hobby.

@arstechnica I was confused for years because the voice in my head is clearly a woman saying you've got mail.

Turns out I'm just old enough to remember the compuserve version and only ever used AOL briefly.
