i’m really enjoying following @MichaelWhelan on here. he posts wonderful dives into his incredible fantasy/sci-fi/etc. artwork and it’s a great brain break every time.
@cabel @MichaelWhelan Thanks! Followed.
@gedeonm Such a nice trip down memory lane, but also some works that I haven’t seen before. I hadn’t realized that you didn’t already follow him, considering your sci-if and illustration interests. I’m glad that you’ve discovered his feed now!
@cabel @MichaelWhelan same! it’s also a tiny time travel trip, if you grew up seeing these books in the stores and libraries, coffee tables at home. I love it.
@cabel Me too, and I’m shocked by how many I recognize instantly.

@siracusa @cabel

I’m loving it. I haven’t seen a lot of his work in 30 years when he was painting the covers of most of what was reading then, so most of this is newer work I’m pleased as punch to see.

@cabel @MichaelWhelan I love it too. Although I didn’t know him by name, some of my favorite book covers are made by him. Also whenever I see any kind of portal, I am reminded of his art 🙂
@cabel @MichaelWhelan I feel the same. Insights into his process also explain why I always felt that having one of his covers — which are instantly recognizable — was an indication of at least baseline quality, usually far more than that. He actually reads the book and puts the work in to make a representative and thematic image. Contracting him as a cover artist meant that the publisher cared and similarly did their best work.

@cabel @MichaelWhelan His posts are a truly a tall glass of cool water in my timeline. I followed him on Twitter, and was super happy when he also joined Mastodon.

I really enjoy his thoughts in the visible text, but his alt text is next-level. More than once, I’ve learned something from the alt-text – whether it’s details that I missed in the image, or his intentions about the composition.

@cabel @MichaelWhelan @marick thank you for this pointer. I love his art!
