Insights into his process also explain why I always felt that having one of his covers — which are instantly recognizable — was an indication of at least baseline quality, usually far more than that. He actually reads the book and puts the work in to make a representative and thematic image. Contracting him as a cover artist meant that the publisher cared and similarly did their best work.
