Another Halloween night behind us. We had about the usual number of kids (last year it was ~1,200) and went through all 10 gallons of our “special” hot cider for the grown-ups in about 90 minutes.
For those of you thinking “twelve HUNDRED WHAAAAT the HELL”, Halloween is a Really Big Deal on our street. Like, there have been local news stories about it. Partly it’s location, but I think mostly it’s that lots and lots of people go all out decorating for Halloween and that draws families. To illustrate: this was the main part of our yard display this year. This would be considered an understated effort by the street’s standards.
Halloween 2024: Epilogue.
@Meyerweb Sounds like there was a decoration arms race between neighbors some time in the past with each always passively aggressively trying to one-up the other and I wish I could've seen that.
@phryk “Keeping up with the boneses”, we call it.
@Meyerweb That's awful and I love it. :D
@Meyerweb Ok, I feel a lot less cocky about my high of 13.
@Meyerweb That's wild. But do you have a potato house? https://bsky.app/profile/ruinista.bsky.social/post/3l7tmhwcw4x2o (NB: only available to logged-in Bluesky users)

@Meyerweb that blows my mind. I carved two pumpkins
@Meyerweb Twelve. HUNDRED? That's bonkers! I thought we had a lot in years when we got 100.

@Meyerweb We get literally two orders of magnitude fewer trick-or-treaters than you.

Not less candy, though. I mean, you never know. Just to be safe.

@Meyerweb Halloween in your neighbourhood sounds like such a joyous, chaotic affair.

Love the idea of adding a relaxing warm beverage for the adults who are marshalling kids through that!

@AmeliaBR It really is that — raucous in all the right ways.

@Meyerweb we topped 430 kids on our block this year. Up from 350 last year in the freezing rain. This is all that’s left.

360 assorted full sized bars, 36 bags of cookies and then two bags of individual Reese’s.

@Meyerweb 1200!!??? Are they bussing them in? We had like, 12.
@Meyerweb 1,200?!? Last year we had our best year yet here – 12.
