Thunderbird for Android 8.0 Takes Flight - The Thunderbird Blog

Thunderbird for Android takes flight today! Find out what's new in the first stable release, where to download it, and how to get started!

The Thunderbird Blog
@thunderbird do you have a loose ETA on the iOS version? Hopefully the schedule slid to the left?

@ekennedy80 Having Thunderbird for Android out definitely gets us closer! This is a very loose estimate, but I imagine we'll start actively planning, which will mean hiring an iOS engineer, next year, hopefully towards the beginning.

This typist is an iOS user, so I know the wait is hard, too!

@thunderbird have you thought about adding Bluesky to your social media portfolio and continue adding fuel to the X-odus?
@ekennedy80 We may be conducting some preliminary explorations to add Bluesky to our platforms 😊 💙
@thunderbird Congrats to the team on the release!
@me Thank you! It was a complete team AND community effort, and we're proud of everyone!
Can I ask is K9Mail going to cease to exist then and would us users be advised to move across ?
@justine @thunderbird According to Mozilla itself, it will coexist with Thunderbird for a few months before eventually merging with it.
Thank you.

@justine @BurpBlog @thunderbird switching to the new app is super easy. You can choose to import settings from the k9 or thunderbird beta
@BurpBlog @thunderbird @justine So - stop K-9 updates. And let work, until work... (
@justine @thunderbird I'm also curious what will happen to #k9mail đŸ€”

@michal @justine @thunderbird

K-9 has been worked on until they decided to call it Thunderbird. It's the same product and you'll feel right at home.

@michal @leffe @thunderbird @justine "It's the same product" May be. But with fresh telemetry from Mozilla. No, thanks.
Thunderbird Telemetry | Thunderbird Help

Thunderbird collects telemetry data by default. We collect this data to help improve the performance and stability of Thunderbird. Learn more.

@wthinker @michal @thunderbird @justine

I use TrackerControl, which automatically blocked Mozilla telemetry.

David Culley (@[email protected])

Mozilla bought the excellent Android email app K-9 (which didn’t include any trackers) and integrated trackers as part of #Mozilla‘s rebranding under the #Thunderbird name. They even made it opt-out instead of opt-in. Their defense for breaking the law: ”we wouldn’t have enough data if we obeyed the law.“ It doesn’t matter whether you ”anonymized“ the data or not: If you want to extract data from someone’s device to yours, you may do so only if they knowingly consented. https://social.tchncs.de/@kuketzblog/113244035577912640

Please everybody read this.
How could anybody believe for a moment that #Mozilla would not ruin the only perfect FOSS solution AGAIN!??
Fare to hell with your opt-out tracking, #Mozilla!
@justine @thunderbird I believe that is the long-term plan? Though, I heard that migration is relatively seamless, and from having used both the UI/UX is still very similar so you'll probably not be missing anything :)
@[email protected] Great news. Now it’s time for #iOS version as well.

@thunderbird Congrats on the release!

Any chances it'll come to the Galaxy Store like Firefox?

@thunderbird Congratulations! Is there any list what's new compared to latest K9?
@thunderbird @mickge tiens ben on en parlait haha

@thunderbird

Why is the first version named 8.0?
(Did i miss this piece of information?)

@nick the old name is K-9 Mail

@cybertailor

Sure... but latest K-9 version is 6.804, right?

@nick it's a re-brand from K-9

@thunderbird

Will Thunderbird be available via F-Droid?

@fdroidorg

@voorstad @thunderbird

It says that F-Droid is coming soon in the announcement.

@voorstad @thunderbird yes, if is due to be built in the current cycle

@thunderbird

That is good news, happy to find it in the playstore in Germany, even though the beta version appears first depending on the search

@thunderbird Dead link in blog: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-thunderbird-android-version-8

Congrats!! Excited to get the bird on my home row. I like the dog but I like the bird slightly more =)

@thunderbird Will Thunderbird for Android eventually support the plugins from desktop?
@thunderbird The new export function in the desktop Firefox worked smoothly.
@thunderbird Congrats, of course, but I can’t help but wonder if supporting additional platforms is the right priority when there are still numerous issues with the desktop release. For example, the long-promised message threading and the very broken calendar still need attention!
@thunderbird Congratulations. Is this a separate download/instalallation to K-9 Mail or will K-9 mail update itself into Thunderbird?
@thunderbird it's really nostalgic to part with the robo-dog icon on home screen, but there's no better family for K-9 to get taken in by, hands down.
The bark notification sound will stay though. 😅😋
Big kudos to #k9mail and hello world, thunderbird! #FOSS 4 life ❀
Wondering if the K-9 Mail version from F-Droid will just rebrand to Thunderbird on next update, or if it would be a different package that needs to be installed.
@thunderbird the migration from K-9 was seamless and easy, just 2 taps. Though the App is now a bit too Android-ish, I think it kind of smoother than K-9?
I still need to make used to with the new panel.

@thunderbird a small hickup.

K-9 mail settings import isn't working.

@nemeciii @thunderbird update to newest version in the play store will do
@mingu @thunderbird I'm on the latest version that the playstore offers me.
@nemeciii @thunderbird The K-9 Mail app? It's 8.0 if you can check it.
@mingu @thunderbird check, check, double check. No, there's no such update.
@nemeciii @thunderbird i guess it yet got to your region
@nemeciii @thunderbird Please make sure you're on the latest stable version of K9
@nemeciii @thunderbird Same here with K9 v6.804. Do we have to wait for an update of K9 so the versions align? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-android-import#w_how-to-import-from-k-9-or-other-thunderbird-for-android-apps says K9 v8.0 or later is required đŸ€”

How to import email settings from K-9 and Thunderbird for Android

@christianbeier @thunderbird so, how to get it?
@nemeciii @thunderbird I see there's https://github.com/thunderbird/thunderbird-android/releases/tag/K9MAIL_8_0 so maybe this just needs a while to propagate through the Play Store review process?

@christianbeier @thunderbird that.

Also with Play-store you can expedite the process but maybe they went with the regular staged release.

It took a few days for the update to appear.

@thunderbird outstanding! Installing today!!!

@thunderbird

I would like to use the function "export to mobile" in the Thunderbird Desktop (Flathub), how can I upgrade from 128.3 to 138.4 which is the precondition to have that function?

@thunderbird are you plan to release it on F-Droid? And if yes, when it comes?

@thunderbird Congratulations on the successful release of Thunderbird for Android! It's an exciting milestone for the team. I wanted to inquire politely about when we might expect support for the Exchange Web Services protocol, as discussed in the community forum. Thank you!

Support Exchange Web Services Protocol in K-9 Mail

We use Microsoft Exchange for our email, and we probably always will. We host Exchange on our own server and have webmail. This was the reason I was tied to Evolution for so long; Evolution was the only Linux client which supported Exchange Web Services directly in the client. Thankfully, Davmail ta...

@v613 Early next year, we'll work on creating and publishing our roadmap for 2025, and we'll be looking at things like Connect to help us decide where we'll be going. Thank you for asking!

@thunderbird When I try to log in to Yahoo Mail it says: Oops, something was wrong. Developers: please specify a valid request and submit again.

Any hint on what should I try?

How do I add a Yahoo account?

If your email address is using one of the supported domains, adding a Yahoo account should be fairly straight-forward. If your email address is using an unsupported Yahoo domain, you’ll have to manually set up your account. See further down for instructions. Supported domains Follow these instructions if your email address is using one of the following domains: yahoo.com yahoo.de ymail.com rocketmail.com Enter your email address. Then press the “Next” button. Tap the “Sign in” butt...

@thunderbird thank you for the reply. I could resolve the problem already. Once I configured the account on Thunderbird, either manually or loading it from K-9, the browser opens for authentication. I was using Firefox as default browser, with "strict ennhanced tracking protection". I don't know if that's the root cause, but I switched my default browser to chrome only for authenticating and it worked. After my account was correctly loaded in Thunderbird, I switched back to Firefox.
