iPad feature request: auto "deep sleep" after 24h idle (10 seconds to wake is okay). iPads used to last over 30 days on standby, but every time I pick one up now after less than a week it's dead

Steve Jobs announcing the iPad 2:

@christianselig I've noticed this too! Although strangely the iPad Pro (2nd gen) I have on my desk will last *weeks*, however the current one doesn't seem to do that
@b3ll You must have a golden one, we have like 4 iPads kicking around with background activity all disabled and none of these last a week lol
@christianselig @b3ll This specific behaviour has turned my iPad into a paperweight. I’d love to use it, but it’s dead all the time, or charging all the time.

@christianselig @b3ll This happened to me.. Although its gotten slightly better since the first 18.1 betas, it was _really_ bad

Anyone else with an M4 iPad and 18.1? This morning at 9am I unplugged it from power at 80%, to see if it would be dead when I got home. Got home 9 hours later, and it was dead. I guess something is running in background and killing the battery..

@b3ll @christianselig Another factor may be the WiFi you are on and whether it provides the devices with power saving options available in the standard.
And of course Siri must eat some energy it it‘s always listening.
@chris @b3ll Weird that the iPad 2 managed with much more ancient WiFi standards
@christianselig @b3ll Weird reply. We don’t know whether applications/radio/networking environment of the two devices mentioned are the same and the only difference is the OS version. That‘s only known to Adam.
I only added the information that the WiFi standard and configuration can have an influence on the energy usage of the devices.
Sometimes people upgrade or reconfigure routers in the timespan of multiple years. If so it may be worth to look into it.
@chris @b3ll I’m saying if a WiFi standard and configuration can more than quarter a device’s battery life then that’s an OS problem. It’s fun to imagine but it isn’t something an end user should have to be troubleshooting
@christianselig Every time I think about grabbing my iPad to do something it’s dead ☠️
@alcateia @christianselig ipad, such an amazing device, so nice to hold and use, so difficult to find an use case for
@usuario @alcateia @christianselig apparently drawing is very easy on an ipad, with the first generation pencil. That's why I bought mine.
@usuario I’ve had a use case for the last 14 years.
@christianselig I read somewhere that the Home app can often be a cause of consistent battery drain on iPads, even it’s not the home hub. I disabled Home on my iPad mini and it helped a bunch.
@hisaac Interesting! How do you disable it?

@christianselig It’s weird, you have to do it from iCloud settings.

Settings > Apple Account (very top item) > iCloud > Saved to iCloud > Disable the Home toggle

Apple Confirms iPad Will No Longer Be Supported as a Home Hub in iOS 16

The iPad will no longer be able to be used as a home hub following the launch of iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, and the HomePod 16 software this...

MacRumors
@jmml @christianselig ah good to know! Disabling Home still helped my battery life considerably, but I guess home hub wasn’t the culprit.
@hisaac @christianselig the problem is disabling home prevents you from using the home app at all (even toggles from the control center)
@jmml @christianselig True. For me it was an acceptable trade off. Might not be for everyone.
@christianselig a week? I’m lucky if my iPad Pro lasts two days on standby. :-(
@christianselig I thought I had some sort of development weird shit causing my iPad to almost always be dead even when I remember it having 50%+ battery life when I put it down….
@christianselig I have a hot take with this that it is related to Apple Pencil. Ever since we got the Apple Pencil that wirelessly charges off the iPad, I feel like I’ve had terrible iPad stand by time. Like the pencil is constantly siphoning charge! Whenever I don’t have the pencil attached I feel like I get back stand by time but I’ve never done a full enough test to be sure.

@christianselig this. So much this.

I have a shortcut to put my iPad into low power and airplane mode when the battery drops because standby time is nonexistent anymore.

It used to be so great.

@christianselig Out of curiosity, do they have cellular?
@gregatron5 Good question but alas they do not
@christianselig It sucks because my Android tablets work the same way too.
Seems if we just put extra unnecessary charge cycles on the battery, it'll help "encourage" customers to replace their tablets sooner than they need to I guess...
@christianselig I thought it was just me and I was doing something wrong. I have just started turning my iPad off when I’m not using it, which is mildly inconvenient, but less so than it always being dead.
@praetorianpi That would help if I would remember, sometimes I set it down and just do something else without thinking ;_;
@christianselig Yeah, and at that very moment I really wanted to use said iPad--so I'm really pissed!
@christianselig Disabling Find My might help
@christianselig I had to setup an automated shortcut that would trigger a reminder when my iPad drops below 50% and again for 20%.
@christianselig this! The iPad is a niche device that’s handy every once in a while, but it is _always_ dead when I go to use it unless it was left plugged in somewhere. Even when actually turned off they seem to lose charge and be dead in less than a month.
@christianselig literally every time I pick up my iPad Pro. I’ll charge it, unplug it and use it for 20 minutes and it’s practically dead the next day.
@christianselig This is literally why I stopped buying iPads. My use was infrequent enough that every time I went for it, it was dead. Whatever convenience it afforded was nullified by having to be charged.
@christianselig I agree that standby should be way better than it is. I have a Shortcuts automation to put my iPad into Airplane mode and power saving mode during the night. Which helps a little, but not that much.
@christianselig My iPad Air easily lasts me for more than a week when it has been charged before. Maybe some background apps that consume a lot of power? I’m not much of a power user on the iPad though 😅
@lx A week isn't very impressive when they used to last over a month :/
@christianselig Yeah I know what you mean. I’d say two weeks is realistic though with my usage. But some form of automatic battery saver mode could already help. 🤔
@christianselig are you using a magnetic case / folio for your iPad? Might be wrong on that, but if the lid is closed it seems to survive for at least 2 weeks untouched (iPad Air 11” M2)
@christianselig yeah I basically turn on airplane mode any time I’m not using my iPad now, otherwise every time I grab the stupid thing it’s dead. It’s annoying
@christianselig Yeah, it fucked up for some reason at some point 🤔 Curious why - some „always listen” services like Continuity or AirDrop? Cloud services?
@christianselig do you have a Pro with an Apple Pencil attached? I find that keeping my pencil attached drains the battery super fast but when it falls off in my bag, the iPad lasts forever in standby
@bmpitzen I have several so a few without Apple Pencils and they still are rough :(
@christianselig so true. I use mine rarely (maybe once a week) and its default state is drained.
@christianselig I’m glad it’s not just me, Christian!
@christianselig I'm not sure what changed, but this used to be a really bad problem, and now it's back to the good old days – I just dug out an iPad Pro that I haven't touched in a month, and it still had 50% power. (Yes, this post really did stick with me that long!)
@twostraws @christianselig They now reboot after 3 days without use, and I believe that a reboot kills background processing and updates. Could be wrong, though.
@twostraws iOS 26? Will update an iPad this is promising!
