Night Train Map in Europe (2024), https://back-on-track.eu/night-train-map/. This is an interactive map: each line is clickable and brings information about all the stops, schedules, frequency and the company operating this line. That’s pure beauty.

Combined with InterRail, it’s so much travel freedom and opportunities in Europe!

Night Train Map 2026 – Back-on-Track

@hywan omg this is so cooooool
@hywan @girlonthenet Very nice! And those are only the *night* trains. There are high speed trains too, and regular intercity trains, and local trains to nice towns and villages… #trains #train
@verbeeld @girlonthenet Correct. It’s purely about night trains only.
@hywan its a pity spain’s been taking them out over time
@sargontrek I heard it’s being discussed since many years but I don’t know what’s the current status.
@hywan last time i checked theres madrid-lisbon and madrid-galicia(not sure what cities) , there used to be a Madrid paris…
@hywan really cool initiative! Too bad it’s so hard to use on mobile. Will have to check back on a bigger screen.
@b0rn_dead It’s a disaster on mobile, agree. On a large screen, you also have to zoom the page, not the map, to get a better understanding. It’s a detail though, the database exists!
@hywan @b0rn_dead
Brilliant and it really exposes the vandalism of night trains in Iberia particularly.
I can't zoom it at all on either laptop browser so adding a zoom button would be good, and probably easy.

@hywan some interesting landmass rendering issues where it's hard to decide whether it's a bug or intended ;)

(zooming in and out causes all sorts of similar issues - this is on macOS Chrome)

@floooh Climate change has provoked sea level increase, resulting in the disparition of some islands.
@hywan france disconnected from the rest of europe
@davidou There are trains but very few night trains sadly.
@hywan @davidou
There's Paris Berlin now!
@econads @davidou Then it might be interesting to ping the authors of this database, https://back-on-track.eu/night-train-list/, thoughts?

@hywan
It's already on the screen shot if you look closely. Dotted dark pink is hard to see against the dark background.

@davidou

@hywan Thanks! Amazing to see that Ukraine has them in the thickest bunches. I guess our trains are so slow and distances so large that night trains are so much more attractive.
@autkin Possibly. Ukraine is a huge country too.

@hywan Wow, it's beautiful 😍

The map is interactive, but is it generated dynamically?

I love railway-style , but I can't find a good tool to create them.

In a project dedicated to mapping bike lanes, I wanted to simulate railway-style maps (which support zoom) using QGIS, but I couldn't manage to do it.

@hywan Apart from UK, seems like Finland and Norway are on island as well.
@hywan
Ukraine. Just saying.
@hywan
And the one connection that would interest me does not exist.
@rail_
@tagaziel @hywan out of curiosity: to where?
@rail_
Poznan-Berlin
@hywan
@tagaziel @rail_ @hywan It's a bit too short a distance for a night train, isn't it?

@nyca @tagaziel @hywan kinda yeah

And there is plenty of connections between these two cities

@nyca
Yeah, but I'm thinking of a night train that would get me from Poznań to the Franco-Spanish border or even Madrid. I'd like to have some rest, rather than keep flying.
@rail_ @hywan
@hywan I took some Interrail like two decades ago and the night trains were way more than today.
@hywan I hope they will be able to finish #RailBaltica soon!
@hywan cries in Iberian Peninsula 😢
@hywan nice map! Can't wait for the Amsterdam Barcelona connection!
Used to travel to either Madrid or Barcelona by nighttrain quite often. Long ago...
@hywan This is not against the map, which is beautiful work, but it's really sad to see that Luxembourg is still a blank space there. I'm not that old and I remember taking a night train to Marseille for an internship.

@hywan @cobic aw nice! All we had in the late 80s was a tattered copy of “Let’s Go” Europe and a prayer there was an overnight train going somewhere when we got to the station 😍

Rail passes are the ultimate cheap hotel 🙌 Could daydream on that website forever.
