Might be switching #Mastodon instances one last time. I love #TweeseCakeSocial but have been looking for an #instance for #Christians, and I think I found one. You can find it at theres.life. I just applied to join so we'll see what happens. I'm trying to make my #faith stronger and think it will be good for me to be on an instance with other Christians.
#Fediverse
@RareBird_15 I'd be interested to know how it goes. Is there lots of people on there? Are they conservative or more liberal? You could just stay where you are and just folow Christians
@HarmonthSeeker Honestly, I haven't been able to find many Christians to follow, or I would stay where I am. I'm not sure about whether the people on the instance are more conservative or liberal yet.
@HarmonthSeeker as I just told @RareBird_15 that particular instance is known for spam, and is on a lot of known defederation lists for it's high spam and other inappropriate traffic. It's not well-moderated or policed, so it's not a recommended instance.

@RareBird_15

Well, that'll make your faith "stronger," in the sense that you will find confirmation bias within the bubble.

The better way to strengthen your faith is to examine your beliefs and how you arrived at them from an objective standpoint. If your beliefs are true, they will withstand scrutiny. If they're not true, you're better off without them.

@tomcapuder I'm always willing to listen to others and examine my faith, but I also want to be able to fellowship with other Christians and learn from them, and I haven't found many other Christians to follow where I am now.

@RareBird_15

What religion does exceedingly well is promote tribalism: "us" vs. "them," "insiders" vs. "outsiders."

It seems to me as if you're looking for community more than faith-strengthening. Nothing wrong with community; but a community based on sharing the same supernatural beliefs is one to be wary of, IMO.

Before you jump into another Christian group, may I suggest you read Sam Harris's "Letter To a Christian Nation."

[And what's the deal with Christians mangling the English language? "Fellowship" as a verb? Yuk!]

@tomcapuder I guess community is what I'm looking for, but I do also want to build my faith. I've seen lots of Christians use fellowship that way and didn't know it wasn't supposed to be used that way. Because of my health, I don't get an opportunity to go to church much, so I'm looking for ways to meet other Christians and grow my faith online.

@RareBird_15

Why do you feel you have to "grow" your faith?

#atheism #faith #god

@tomcapuder I know I'm a Christian, and I have some idea of what I believe, but between years of health issues and time in a cult that calls itself a Christian church, my faith isn't as strong as I want it to be. I want to make it stronger and get closer to God. I know I believe in God because of experiences I've had in the past, and nothing will change that.

@RareBird_15

If nothing will change that, then good luck to you. Sorry to hear about your health issues.

I wish I could save you from your fruitless wish to be "closer to" a being that most likely doesn't exist, and persuade you to rely on your own strength and the help of fellow humans.

Take care. ☮️

@tomcapuder I do believe in helping and accepting help from others, but I also know God exists. I've had too many experiences that have affirmed that for me.

@RareBird_15

I don't mean to pry, but can you give your best example of an experience you had that affirms a god's existence?

@tomcapuder Once, when I was 16 and dealing with extreme pain in my right eye from something misdiagnosed as glaucoma, I was constantly praying for the pain to be taken away. I'd tried different treatments and nothing was working. I'd been trying to preserve what little vision I had even though it was barely usable and I was extremely light-sensitive, but one day the idea to have my eye removed just like my left one was when I was two came to me. I know I wouldn't have thought of that on my own. Then, on the day of the surgery, my mom turned on my favorite Christian music station in the car on the way to the hospital, and it was like every song that came on was telling me things were going to be better. When I went in for surgery, you would think I would have been scared, but I wasn't. I was ready, and something told me things would be better for me after that surgery. My mom was more scared for me than I was. Getting that surgery allowed me to finish high school without constant pain. There are also other things, like seeing the way the world and the universe work, and not believing it all could have developed randomly or without an intelligent designer.

@RareBird_15

"I know I wouldn't have thought of that on my own." Yet you did, unless you can demonstrate that the thought came from something outside of yourself. There's no *reason* to believe it did, outside of your feeling that you couldn't have come up with the thought on your own.

"something told me things would be better for me after that surgery" Yes, the Christian songs you were listening to that you said were telling you things were going to be better.

We can have a separate discussion about an "intelligent designer" if you like, but your story appears to me to be using an informal logical fallacy called the Argument from Incredulity: I don't understand how this thing could've been possible, therefore a god did it.

There is nothing there that can't be accounted for by medical science without any divine input.

@tomcapuder You have a right to believe what you blieve, but please stop trying to push it off on me. I know how I feel about that incident and others in my life, and it's not just because I believe I couldn't have thought of the idea to remove my eye on my own. I believe there was a reason those particular songs were playing, and that God was trying to comfort me and get me through a very hard time in my life. I've also seen other incidents where I prayed for something and an answer came.

@RareBird_15

I'm not trying to push anything off on you; merely showing another way to interpret events.

For example, you "believe there was a reason those particular songs were playing." That's one way to interpret it. Another way is that coincidences happen all the time.

Do you keep track of times you prayed and an answer *didn't* come?

___________________
#atheism #faith #god

@tomcapuder I don't believe in coincidences. I also believe that when an answer doesn't come, there's a reason for it, and if I look back, I can usually see that reason later on. Also, God might not answer right away, but I've found that I usually get an answer at some point.

@RareBird_15

Okay, I'll leave you alone now. You appear to be so closed-minded that nothing will penetrate what is probably a lifelong indoctrination.

Good luck to you.

@tomcapuder It's not indoctrination. I was a member of a cult that I thought was Christian for a while, and after I realized the problems there with the help of family, I left and went back to Christianity. It's just what makes the most sense to me.

@tomcapuder
@RareBird_15

I think we all have our beliefs and reasons for such. Some people believe there is no God, and I can understand that. Similarly, some people believe you should/should not be honest when no one is looking. I can't imagine someone saying, "Let me save you from your honesty."

People have different reasons for believing in God. Some of them really do blindly and unquestioningly believe, because their parents said so.
Doesn't sound like Lanie's one.

@munchkinbear Oh, I didn't realize that. I might not switch then. Thanks for telling me. It was just the largest Christian instance I could find. Others only seem to have 16 or 17 members.
@RareBird_15 yeah, as an instance admin myself, I researched why it was on the lists, and the majority of the notes were spam, among other inappropriate things not christian related.
@RareBird_15 @munchkinbear I didn't know this either. wow!
@RareBird_15 @munchkinbear I follow a lot of people who are on deacon.social and they seem like very thoughtful and reflective people. I don’t know what the rules or requirements are for that instance, but it might be an option for you.
@RareBird_15 Did you get your signup confirmation email from that instance? Just tried three times and nothing came through.
@daygar Yes, I did. That's weird that you didn't get one. I heard a lot of instances have blocked it though and it's known for spam, so I already deleted my account instead of switching.
