So, the Internet Archive has two different problems at the same time:

1. A massive data breach, which has been confirmed.

2. A DDoS/defacement by a hacktivist group that claims they're doing this for Palestine, which has some real strong "we're kicking this puppy for Palestine" energy.

@evacide just got the mail from haveibeenpwned and thought #wtf (it doesn't help that HIBP doesn't actually update its websites so that the links in the mail actually work, ugh), but i didn't know about the defacement, where's that?
@Anarcat I think I may have misread and conflated the hacking group's posts with a defacement.
@Anarcat @evacide there was an alert()-based defacement for ~30 mins before the site was replaced with their generic error message. It's related to the breach, not the DDoS though. https://fox.nexus/@theresnotime/113279503202935344

@evacide part of me wonders if the palestine one is just an op to piss people off
@niko that makes the most sense to me
@niko
' would imagine as much. Reporting it as if it were sincere seems a tad irresponsible ...
@evacide
@niko It came from a blue checkmark account on twitter and blue checks get paid for engagement on posts. such a good system...
@evacide I believe it's a troll excuse.
@evacide I feel like that group has a lot of other sites they could DDOS for Palestine...
@evacide I would be careful not to make too much of (2). If the miscreant(s) are identified, they can cast light on their motives with mugshots on file. As anonymous actors, what they say is likely bollocks.
@fgbjr
Yes. Has any pro-Palestinian group actually claimed responsibility?
@evacide
@evacide Huh. I thought it came in threes
@evacide That's really bad for them. But you also forgot the third thing, they're still recovering from their lawsuits from book publishers and record labels.

@evacide It's probably the one place you can find good quality unbiased media on the Israel-Palestine conflict for free (even if it's among a pile of actual shit).

They've got to be either stupid or controlled opposition.

@evacide
Strong suppression vibes.
@evacide How is defacing Internet Archive going to help Palestine? (Asking as a pro-palestanian)
@evacide Interesting that HIBP notified me (I signed up for monitoring), but the IA has not made a peep.
@evacide I would guess the "for palestine" is a false flag attack?
@evacide

The absolute wrong way to go about this.
@evacide
Twice is coincidence.
Three times is enemy action.
@evacide *sigh* I don't even know what to say at this point. People are stupid...
@evacide certain people have an interest in portraying history a certain way. And independent information is in the way of that. For example: independent information backed with sources about the history of a certain plot of land.
@evacide They always do that for an idea. Never for the money.
@evacide
I think some ai spell check messed up this message. That should have been "we're doing this for publishers"
