What helps me with battle descriptions while I am running a #ttrpg campaign is to consider a roll to hit as a roll to damage, especially in #dnd where your defense is a cumulative value of everything you got to defend yourself.

Let them arrows plonk off armor, the broadsword bite into the shield and the spell puff out harmlessly on the sheer willpower of the player.

Not every miss must be a miss.

@Imperor I've definitely considered this since getting involved in a game again last year. Using D&D terms: An to-hit roll under 10 just misses; 10 to 10+Dex means you dodge the attack; an attack that would hit unarmored but fails because of armor means the armor blocked/deflected it. Shields, magic items or spells, etc,... mix and match to find what the critical thing was to make the attack fail and use that to describe what happened. Doesn't have to be done every time, but can provide variety.
