Selfish request:

It would be really funny if more people posted about this on their blogs and other socials to ensure it gets high visibility on search engines: https://soatok.blog/2024/09/30/why-are-furry-conventions-offering-hiv-testing-to-attendees/

If you have a blog, maybe write something that links to it.

If you have a newsletter, consider including it somewhere.

Right now if you type the title into a search engine, you get the r/yiffinhell post where people were complaining about it 5 years ago. It would be nice if folks were instead greeted by an explainer. ;)

Why are furry conventions offering HIV testing to attendees? - Dhole Moments

Spoiler: It’s nothing scandalous or bad. Every once in a while, someone posts this photo on Twitter to attempt to dunk on furries: Midwest FurFest 2018 Over the years, I’ve seen this di…

@soatok heh, reminds me when I had a pretty annoying "hey post our content on your blog or a link to our thing on your blog" spam problem.

Solved it using This One Weird Trick:
https://rys.io/en/160.html

tl;dr started replying with "sure, here's the price, and here's the cost of handling any further communication from you that is not simply acceptance of my terms; where do I send the bill?"

The spam stopped a few months after that.

@soatok freezing cold take, but HIV testing should just casually be at any sufficiently large event. My town's super small pride festival had a testing booth and it was fine! nobody died! it was literally just a little, completely optional booth. I got tested despite not being sexually active, because it was there and seemed like an interesting thing to check out.

@Dio9sys @soatok even colder take: it should just be part of routine bloodwork done at annual checkups (for those that have reasonable health care coverage and can actually *do* annual checkups, at least).
@Dio9sys @soatok I help run our Pride here and basically ANY event we can get the STI testing folks to come to, we do. In many cases their state funding is determined by how many tests they do, so they're always eager to come to events to catch people who aren't regular!

The large events we also get the vaccination folks as well, so we had mobile Covid vaccination & Mpox at multiple events.

We do an open mic every week and have a pile of health supplies out every time. This is the little box that goes in bathroom (we also stick something similar in all bathrooms at big events, with some bonus first aid supplies and menstruation products)
@soatok
I need to suggest to the AnthrOhio staff that we could invite OHIV to come have a booth and pass out information on free testing and PrEP as well as free condoms. I don't think they have the means to test at the con but they might!
@soatok StratosFur 2024 was able to offer on-site HIV testing for one day, operated by Harris County Public Health. It was no cost to that convention either, and it's a much smaller con than MFF.

@soatok @drwho @drwho Best line ever!!!

"To wit: Ask any experienced event organizers about their experiences with Tupperware conventions, and you’ll hear stories that make furry convention antics seem tame in comparison."

@soatok Midwest FurFest is def one of the US furcons I want to go to before I kick the bucket.
