no single image has ever done more damage to a set of technology than the mark zuckerberg meta avatar picture has done to VR
just saw someone on twitter say meta changed its entire name for a product that failed. failed is a very strong word for a device that sold more than the latest xbox but those initial avatars were fucking shit and i cant believe they ever shipped them
@lexd0g I think it's more like a vision that failed. they are selling Quests left and right but the whole "metaverse" vision fell through
@tj @lexd0g that and I don't know if the userbase actually stayed for that long after they bought their units, and I would be shocked if they weren't selling those headsets at a loss. I remember being shocked at the launch price of the Quest 2

@chickfilla @tj @lexd0g

I think people who have Quests are still using VR as much as anyone.
Just, not Facebook's stupid version of VR. They're using real VR.

@aearo @chickfilla @lexd0g I generally agree, but based on nothing but Vibes, people with Quests are probably more casual users than the average VR player, so probably use it less

@tj @chickfilla @lexd0g

Seems fair. I mean, given that Quests are the cheap headsets, I'd figure they've got more casual users on average by at least a little bit.

@tj @aearo @chickfilla @lexd0g As someone with a Quest, nah, definitely beyond casual. And most of my friends are too. It's a good headset for heavy usage.
@krutonium @aearo @chickfilla @lexd0g statistically, I don’t think you and your friend group are representative of the population of all Quest users. Even though it’s good for heavy use I doubt most users do
@tj @lexd0g like 2D games looked way better then 3D games at the time of the N64, video meetings feels more direct then "metaverse" meetings at the moment. I think people will maybe start to use it if 1, the graphics get so good that it looks like a real setting and 2, everyone already has vr devices for other reasons. It is not what will bring people to buy VR headsets.
@lexd0g i wouldnt say succeeded either though

the proposition for it was very much of coporate motivation - trying to sell it as an enterprise solution

whereas what's succeeded is making a thing for gamers who
begrudgingly accept it because its the cheapest on the market since the units can be sold at a loss

@aperture i didnt begrudgingly accept it personally. once they removed the facebook requirement i didnt really have any issues with the quest line and theyre still the best hardware on the market imo
@lexd0g the majority of ppl are begrudging from my experience, due to the ties with meta and such

i mean i am glad that you like it but anecdotally the majority of quest owners we've talked with have opened up conversations about it with something to the tune of "well im not a fan of the fact that its a facebook/meta product but its kinda the only financially reasonable choice" lksdgbknsdgj

as for best hardware on the market, definitely not but definitely best price to performance but thats just me being pedantic im sure thats what you meant sbjkdgjsbkdg

@aperture tbh i didnt like it when i first got my quest 2 but i was really only concerned about the required facebook login. once they dropped that (which they never really required bc they killed oculus accounts after they introduced meta accounts) i was perfectly happy with recommending it and most less techy people ive met dont really care who makes it. i think theyre delivering a solid platform and theyre pumping a shitload of money into it which means more games which id say is pretty nice. id love to see more competition though even if id stick with meta as that always ends up being good for everyone but valve fell asleep 4 years ago and sony seemingly forgot psvr2 existed :(

as for best on the market i meant more so overall to me. i really value comfort and convenience and the quest 3 is the most comfortable headset ive worn apart from the bigscreen beyond and its a million times more convenient than any other vr headset ive used. the pimax crystal and the beyond and the apple vision pro have better screens and whatever but they have other massive drawbacks.

@lexd0g No one sane is buying the Meta Quest malware device for Meta's bullshit though.

Isn't it mostly VRChat with the cheapest (malware feature subsidized) headset?
@lexd0g I still don't know why they went with kinect-era Miiverse-ripoff Xbox avatars as the artstyle for this. but like somehow more uncanny valley than that.
@lexd0g dumber question: is Mark Zuckerberg an egg?
@gyro i actually dont mind how the new avatars look tbh. id rather have those than the almost-realistic uncanny personas of the apple vision pro
@lexd0g I haven't seen 'em. Probably I am lucky to not have seen them
@gyro theyre not that bad lol. theyre still cartoony but theyre a lot closer to what youd see in second life rather than wii sports
@[email protected] @[email protected] If I can't be an alien robot, a sentient particle cloud or a lil fuzzy critter, what is even the point
@gyro @lexd0g so like are Facebook even still trying to make "metaverse" a thing?

@lexd0g I still can't believe vrchat existed for several years and had a thriving community, yet zuck comes around with this abomination and everyone thinks he invented something new and use the "metaverse" term he coined.

It breaks my heart seeing people use meta-terminology about vrchat.

@lovely_radio @lexd0g It's a bit like how Discord ruined the word "server" lol.
@lovely_radio @lexd0g he didn't coin the term metaverse; it was used in Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash.
@lexd0g VR will probably be fine, beat saber is still holding up the entire industry and the Quest is actually one of the more affordable headsets, VRChat even has a nickname for annoying Quest users, Quest kiddies. But Meta's Horizon Worlds? That is DOA. Frankly, Horizon Worlds was always going to fail because they kept trying to make it an NFT marketplace and a virtual office space, two things fucking no one wants.
@lexd0g Yeah VR is a cool and actually useful piece of technology, it sucks (zucks) that he made it sound like a scam.

@Datenegassie @lexd0g @mynameistillian A lot of the underlying software for corpo tech has some degree of legitimate use (it varies; blockchains have little use and crypto deserves to burn, AI and VR have quite a bit but it's not at all what the corpos are pushing with them).

This is the most painful part of the whole mess for me because now they're kinda tainted for a while.

@lexd0g no clue who told those guys it would be a great idea to release this to the public in that state. Do you all even remember second live? it looked better back than than this thing
@lexd0g 🫴🦋 is this VRChat? /j
@lexd0g depending in how we define image the philips dcc demonstration happening at the same time as sonys minidisc probably comes close
Whenever I remember the whole metaverse fad (which thankfully happens less often nowadays), I start recalling this image and the tweet that read 'this looks like a 2002 Nintendo GameCube release called like “World Baby”'. And this brings a small smile to my face.
@lexd0g @artemis Why? It’s clearly just a holiday snap of his time in Paris.
@lexd0g if I am not mistaken the cathedral is the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona (extremely badly drawn)
@lexd0g
meta makes me so angry, they manage to fuck up everything they touch
@lexd0g I am hard pressed to think of a worse possible rendition of the Sagrada Familia. The shitty keyring models they do at the gift store have more artistic integrity.
@lexd0g This is just a photo of Mark Zuckerberg.

@lexd0g What about the dude with google glasses in the shower?

No wait... zuckerberg's avatar is worse.
