VP debate: CBS News says Vance and Walz will have to fact-check each other

When JD Vance and Tim Walz take the stage for next week's vice presidential debate, CBS News says it will be up to the candidates, not the moderators, to fact-check each other. That was a sticking point during the two general election presidential debates heard this year. Last spring, CNN moderators did not correct any points made by Donald Trump and Joe Biden during the debate that eventually led to Biden's withdrawal from the race. But earlier this month during the only meeting so far between Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris, ABC News interjected real-time fact checks of statements made by the former president, infuriating him and his supporters.

@GottaLaff But most of us recognize the lies when we hear them. The real test of the journalists will be how they assess the results afterwards. That was what got Biden (and Trump, too).

What Walz will do, given the chance, is school Vance like Vance is a wayward student in his shop class. There may not be journalists to tell Vance not to stick his fingers in the band saw, but Vance will learn soon enough. Either that will happen or Vance will have to learn the same way Mark Robinson learned that truck exhausts are hot...

@GottaLaff So, why have journalists in the debate? A camera team should be sufficient. Whatever. It does not take much to find out whether Vance's lying - just check if his lips are moving when he's speaking. 😅

@GottaLaff why bother having journalists host these things, then? That gives it a false image of having some grounding in facts. Just put sports commentators on charge of the network refuses to enforce a small amount of grounding in truth.

@GottaLaff I watched Robert Acosta illustrate that as he sat mute while Tom Cotton blamed Biden/Harris for everything from threats from Iran to the heartbreak of psoriasis. He pushed back more on Gen. McChrystal for chrissake.
