breaking development from the eggheads down in R&D
@sjolsen This is the way tumblr works, and i used to use masto like this until i was told I should boost a lot less often, so im torn now

@maelstrom071 @sjolsen

It seems that boosting etiquette has shifted just in the year I've been here. I showed up in the big wave of ex redditors and when I first got here it was "Boost a lot! Like doesn't really do anything."

No longer.

@eestileib @maelstrom071 @sjolsen Lawd save me from unspoken rules of etiquette! Rules about bios, rules about following, about following BACK, about liking or boosting or what have you.

I like/found interesting/found valuable/wanted more publicity? I boost.

I want to save? I star.

I want to read later (read: forget and feel guilty about)? I bookmark.

I just like to wander around and read and talk to people and make them laugh. Y’know; be social, read media.

@WhiteCatTamer @eestileib @maelstrom071 @sjolsen Same. I very very VERY seldom favourite, but I boost a lot. Same criteria as you. If I like it and think my followers might be even remotely interested in it, I boost. If I want to read something later, or reply later when I'm at my PC, or want to link to later (typically my own posts), I'll bookmark.

I like your idea though about using Favourite for things you want to save instead, though. Perhaps I might switch to doing that instead.

@eestileib @maelstrom071 @sjolsen I think people should just do whatever. If someone boosts a lot of stuff I don't care about, I'll go to their profile and choose the "hide boosts" option. Someone else might care about it.
@eestileib @maelstrom071 @sjolsen uhm... but likes don't do anything?

@wojtek @maelstrom071 @sjolsen

Likes are a read receipt.

@eestileib @maelstrom071 @sjolsen so… "don't do anything"

(and "read receipt" on socia media via explicit click on "start" is… uhm… I won't use "bad words" ;) )

@maelstrom071 @sjolsen

Dont let people tell you what to do (except me right now 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣).

I boost liberally.

@maelstrom071 @sjolsen

I just deleted lots of agreeable bleugh, because [text not deleted follows]

Anyhoo, what do I know? Boost/⭐/reply, or not, as you will. 😎

@maelstrom071 @sjolsen to me boosting is simply "I would share this in a group chat with like-minded friends". The question is "would others be interested?".
@maelstrom071 @sjolsen the decision to boost belongs to you
@maelstrom071 @sjolsen if you boost too much, you will flood others' home feeds and they will silence you.
@maelstrom071 @sjolsen lies, boost everything, how else am others meant to find new people to follow
@sjolsen anger the CEO of Hetzner with this one simple trick!!!
@sjolsen The staring to show u read it is so accurate though
@sjolsen emoji reacts are the "mastodon isn't fedi" button
@sjolsen Well, guess what? I'm shitposting, liking, marking as read and yuri'ing this for future reference.
@sjolsen don't let Hetzner see the last one
@sjolsen i'am yuri, this is my flag!
@sjolsen
and i thought the last one was the 'forget this post' button.

@sjolsen i mostly use the last one as "better check it's not a shitpost before liking"

(have yet to actually open any of those ever again)

@virtulis "looks like it could be funny or interesting if": "I knew some context" or "I look into it/read the article" (never to see my eyes again)

and some stuff I don't "favourite" but I kinda like but I bookmark and idk I don't really know it just feels like I should bookmark it to maybe see again one day

@sjolsen i got it!

the last button is "big if true"

@sjolsen "I might need this in the future"
_forgets about it_
@sjolsen last button is "press this button to remember this post for later then immediately forget this post forever"
@gsuberland the computer remembers it for you so you don't have to!
@gsuberland @sjolsen I use it for bad takes, so they can show up in my search results* when I need to dig them up in order to Prove A Point
*assuming search is not broken on my instance, which it currently is since the last 3 months
@ailepet @sjolsen you may already know this trick, but if you add "in:library" to a search it constrains the search to posts that you've interacted with, which can be very useful for this (assuming your instance's search is working, of course :P)
@gsuberland @sjolsen actually that was the default behavior of my instance search field (until it broke), so I got used to pin information which may become useful later, and retrieve it this way. A very useful trick!
@gsuberland @sjolsen this is the only correct answer.
@sjolsen the one on the right is "this is one of my own posts that I'm particularly proud of and might want to refer to later"
@sjolsen I use the last one when I want to get back to it later (I never get back to it later)

@corpsmoderne @sjolsen

Use it all the time! "This person wrote something I want to see/reply to later" (e.g., a song they want to hear or a question I didn't know the answer to at the time)

@[email protected] @[email protected]
I sometimes do — because I usually already have half a reply that I intended to finish later, if I look at it later and don't feel like it, I remove the bookmark. So yep, it's indeed "shitpost later" 😁
@sjolsen i feel like i use a radically different social media

@sjolsen @djsundog That’s the button for when you find something nice that’s *not* a shitpost.

I’ve used it maybe twice.

@sjolsen the bookmark is obviously for posts you want to necroboost later
@sjolsen When I see a reply I made start getting boosted:
@sjolsen The red button opens and closes the garage door of some poor guy in Denver. He’s frustrated and confused.
@jamesbow Hm, but are you sure it always does that? Its shape is somewhat banner-like, so maybe it tries to lift or lower a banner in Arthurian Camelot first, and it only does the garage door thing if it fails - which it often does, but not always... leading to even more confusion for both the garage door owner and the independent observers. @sjolsen
@sjolsen it's simple

The star is for liking a post, the boost button is for if you want your followers to see it, the bookmark is for bookmarking and the arrow is for using your Skibidi Rizz on Local Gyats
@millions the boost button is for showing the world what you've done

@sjolsen

This one's a new button...

' ⚡ Electrify* ' your post ? 🤨

💥 Actually this is just Thread Your Post button but... in keeping with the above theme for 💩.posts on a #ScienceSunday ⚡💩😂🔬

@sjolsen last one is “I want to show this to my wife when I get home”!
@sjolsen sent, liked and shitposted, I was about using the 4th button but now I'm scared
@sjolsen when the flag was added?
@sjolsen
Also, don't forget to press this or else ...
@sjolsen the last button is "manually register to the search index"
