If I like it and think my followers might be even remotely interested in it, I boost. If I want to read something later, or reply later when I'm at my PC, or want to link to later (typically my own posts), I'll bookmark.
I like your idea though about using Favourite for things you want to save instead, though. Perhaps I might switch to doing that instead.

@gsuberland @sjolsen actually that was the default behavior of my instance search field (until it broke), so I got used to pin information which may become useful later, and retrieve it this way. A very useful trick!
