So, I was bored and I made that. It's a tree of life with emojis. It took much more time than I expected... Feel free to share!

New version! (Yes, the dodo is extinct)

[Original post edited with even newer version]

The SVG source file is available there (Creative Commons licence, created with Inkscape): https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Evolution-emoji.svg.
Some emojis might not appear depending on your system.

@qruyant Wow - this is amazing. Thanks for sharing the svg file! I have a couple of lectures coming up on the tree of life so I will definitely use this one.

@qruyant oh that's neat.

The pickle is a hidden gem.

@qruyant
This is amazing! 🀩 Thank you for creating this phylogeny
If there is another update of this may I suggest sponges to be added?
🧽
Using this as reference [https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Origin-and-evolution-of-immunity-in-animals-Metazoa-Many-mechanisms-of-innate-immunity_fig4_235974089]
the sponges (porifera) would probably get their own branch upstream of the fungi πŸ„but before the Cnidaria (Jellyfish and Coral) branch off
@polaris I'll think about it... I hesitated to put this one as well πŸŽƒ but decided not to because it's crafted, and then where do I stop? πŸžπŸΊβ˜•πŸš¬
@qruyant
My argument in favour:
The object 🧽 represents may be crafted, but the underlying organism doesn't have another emoji representation (different to grains 🌾 or Tobacco πŸ‚)
Sponges are also distinct in their biology from other animals and form their own phylum (Porifera):
- multicelled immobile animals
- no nerves but an endoskeleton made of silica needles
- their cells remold their bodies if they are disintegrated (if the right cells are present)

@polaris Here you go!
@qruyant
😍 Thanks for the consideration!
@polaris Since the official Unicode name of the emoji is "Sponge", without further specification, I thought it was legitimate

@qruyant

This is beautiful.
Thanks for this great work.

@qruyant So there is no platypus emoji? Shame.

@qruyant

It really makes it clear how there are not enough plants and fungi emoji and how vertebrate animals are overrepresented compared to arthropods.

WHY is there only one kind of ant and only two kinds of beetle? But we have like 8 carnivores, multiple dogs... it's so unfair.

@futurebird @qruyant Most of the emojis should be microbes should they not?
@futurebird that's clearly a very anthropocentric perspective on life. On the other hand, a more faithful view would be unmanageable
@qruyant @futurebird
I was gonna say, this graphic is great on so many levels aside from a fun depiction of the TOL but also to demonstrate anthropocentric biases in taxonomic sampling!
@drmambobob @futurebird it can be compared with other trees where bacteria occupy most of the tree
@qruyant
First I didn't believe my eyes. But here it is, zhe proof. Whales are far relatives from Kiwis and vice versa.
I knew it, I always knew it.
@futurebird

@futurebird @qruyant
Even within the mammals - some orders completely missing (or have 1 node), while some (Carnivora) are massively covered up to to family level.
Also that lone frog for the whole ~8000 species class is just a bit depressing.

Cutiness/tastyness-driven representation.

@tyx @futurebird yes, within the birds poultry is overrepresented too and lots of families are missing

@qruyant That is so cute! 😍❀️

#Alt4You Abstract image of a giant green tree with brown branches against a blue background, each of which ends in a different emoji symbol representing different plants and animals and their lineage. The image is titled "The Tree of Life" with the subtitle "emoji edition."

@alshra thank you! I added your description to the original picture

@qruyant

This is beautiful! πŸ’–

@qruyant That is most beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
@qruyant if @JacobPhD hasn’t seen this, I think he would appreciate it. IIRC, he did an emoji ToL back when the bird app was not a cesspit.
@qruyant beautiful work! forgive me if you've already seen it, but i'm reminded of this paper that may also be of interest to you: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2589004223026469
Biodiversity communication in the digital era through the Emoji tree of life

Emojis enable direct expressions of ideas and emotions in digital communication, also contributing to discussions on biodiversity conservation. Nevert…

@ribose no I hadn't seen it, thanks a lot!

@qruyant

Oh my god, that's brilliant!
