@durrandon If you read past the first book, Dune doesn't work out so well for the billionaires.
@farbel @durrandon as Ursula K. Le Guin observed, neither did they in the real world.
@farbel I've read through God Emperor of Dune. I don't know that the billionaires have. But each one of them feels confident they will be in the God Emperor role.
@farbel Or as someone else point out, they would like CHOAM, but not Muad'Dib.
@durrandon For giggles, I checked https://icis.corp.delaware.gov/Ecorp/EntitySearch/NameSearch.aspx for "CHOAM" and got *five* LLC results. For *one* state.
Division of Corporations - Filing

@log "We've recreated the Terror Nexus, from the cult cyberpunk novel, Don't Create the Terror Nexus!"

@durrandon
@GatekeepKen

Starting Peter Thiel as Duke Vladimir Harkonnen

@durrandon do they want a Butlerian Jihad though?
@aburka @durrandon LinkedIn asking me to post through an AI filter is the beginning of that.
@aburka They would like CHOAM without going through the Butlerian Jihad. But they are conflicted, because they they are themselves mentats.

@durrandon

So much great Sci Fi dystopia to choose from.

At least with Blade Runner or Fifth Element we get flying noodle carts along with our mega Corp overlords.

@pseudonym @durrandon I dunno, I rather fancy ingesting so much Spice that I develop blue-within-blue eyes.

(But not so much that I turn into an ugly swimming fish-baby)

@durrandon as someone who doesn't know either, can someone enlighten me?

@writeblankspace @durrandon
Star Trek:
United Federation of planets, peace through cooperation, etc

Dune:
Galactic emperor assigns fiefdoms to rich families so that they can exploit the oppressed to enrich themselves further

@DenOfEarth @writeblankspace @durrandon Arn't both of them an improvement on modern capitalism?
@writeblankspace @durrandon The Federation in Star Trek is portrayed as idyllic, generally "above" money although those economics really don't parse well at a closer look, but the impression is plenty for all, equity, opportunity, etc. Dune is pretty dystopic: feudal with big family units controlling most/all wealth, travel, and commerce, and an emperor. Also, eugenics (there are eugenic advocates in Star Trek, but they're generally portrayed as villains).
@Configures @writeblankspace @durrandon tl;dr: Post-Scarcity vs Interstellar Imperial Feudalism. ;)
@durrandon The billionaires want Elysium and are building it.
@JBShakerman @durrandon thankfully this will not work. Still they will waste our resources to try.
@durrandon Or maybe Star Wars...but they aren't the side you might hope.
@durrandon idk, in Dune, they were willing to regulate AI.
@durrandon we have Dune exactly where it belongs: a paperback.
@durrandon Let's give'm Dune. Let's feed'em to the sandworms.
@durrandon and what they're actually building toward is the world of Alien.
@durrandon
Can we start with the Butlerian Jihad against the thinking machines?
@durrandon or maybe Starship Troopers

@durrandon

With Baron Muskonen setting up home on Giedi Prime, (Not to be confused with Amazon Prime, of course).

@durrandon

They might like the Death Star thing though

@durrandon More like Alien 3, tbh

@durrandon

I would love to see Reverend Mother Helen Gaius Mohiam test Musk to see if he's human. Pretty sure he'd get the gom jabbar in the neck.

@durrandon @inthehands pairs perfectly with this classic
@durrandon And billionaires in general are creating Mad Max.
@durrandon Why do I suspect that a Musk mission to Mars uses “Iron Sky” as a basis?
@dtj This sounds correct.
@durrandon
Not really.
AI was outlawed in Dune, while it wasn't outlawed in Star Trek.
@durrandon They want CHOAM, but not Muad-Dib.
@wonka This is correct.
.oO( I have to steal a joke here:

Star Trek Fans: Yay replicators and shuttles, count me in!

Star Wars Fans: Yeah fsck Starfighters fscking up Death Stars, Jedi Knights, count me in!

Warhammer 40k Fans: Nah, i'm good... )Oo.

@durrandon nah. They want Star Trek. They want the Borg. And they want to control the Borg.
