@rowyn yesssssss! At last!

@rowyn
«"Aww." Magnus leaned over my legs, towards Umbral. "Should we pet you while you're in human form so you know we think you're just as cute like this?"»

Definitely an idea worth considering further 👀 (maybe wait till Cassie is feeling better tho)

@Satsuma Cassie: "wait wait I'm feeling better already"
@rowyn
<giggles> Poor Umbral, undermining their own dignity with excess adorability. Nobody who has skritched their tiny kitten ears will ever see them the same way again.
@kelkyag Umbral: "It's not that I mind being undignified, per se, it's just that the whole thing stops working if I remember I'm not actually a kitten."
@rowyn
Fascinating. Does that apply to other shapes, too? If you think about your form as something you're wearing rather than what you are, you can't operate it as intended?
@kelkyag
Umbral: "No, it's not--"
Umbral: *pained look*
Umbral: "So Cassie and Magnus are petting a cute kitten, and this is very sweet and innocent as long as I think 'I am an adorable kitten.'"
Umbral: "But if I think 'I am a person and two attractive humans are running their hands all over my naked body' the experience becomes dissonant and highly inappropriate."
@kelkyag
Umbral: "(To be clear, it is my thoughts which are inappropriate. They are still innocently petting a kitten.)"

@rowyn
They also know that you're a person.

There's a "fur counts as clothing" argument one could make, but if you're finding the situation inappropriate, changing that situation to one you're (all) comfortable with sounds like a good call.

@kelkyag Umbral: "Once my mind gets onto the wrong track, no argument can wrangle it back onto the right one." x_x
@rowyn
<concerned>
@kelkyag Umbral: "It's fine. I just needed to stop pretending to be a kitten at that point, and so I did."
@rowyn eeeeh! teenyfuzz! :D
@rowyn "I promise it's not a trap!"
How many times have I fallen for that? So cute!
@rowyn !!! You did the fuzz so fuzzy!!!
@skysailor the power of cuteness!

@rowyn
Yay, everyone taking responsibility!

Oh dear, this may be Umbral's most adorable form yet. Almost seems like cheating. Dangerously snuggle-able. (I assume she can talk as a kitten if she wants to, but she understands Blackpaw just fine and could presumably communicate similarly.)

@kelkyag tomorrow, you will witness the power of Umbral's unleashed cuteness!

(Umbral: "It is totally cheating. No one can resist the adorable.")

@rowyn it sucks that Cassie’s privacy was violated when she’s already been through so much shit but like, they WERE really helpful to actually getting her back. Without the potions of clarity the whole thing would have been way more of a mess!

@Satsuma

Cassie: "..."
Cassie: "Don't know as I'm angry but I hate this."

@rowyn
Ooof. Cassie deserves rather more time to recover before dealing with this. But she already has questions, so maybe it is best to address them now, or at least soon.

Miss Smoke sounds like she's accepting responsibility and consequences. <ponders her person-ness again>

<notes that this is now at least a five-way relationship, maybe six>

@kelkyag Relationships are complicated!
@rowyn
Yes. These complications are not most people's complications.
@kelkyag We should be so lucky as to have familiars to complicate our relationships. 😊

@rowyn
So far as I can tell Blackpaw didn't do anything to invoke Cassie's ire or dismay in this mess, unless he was somehow involved with the Duke capturing her.

Miss Smoke isn't a familiar (I don't think?), but I still don't know what she is. Or whether Cassie has the option of revoking the relationship Miss Smoke invoked.

@kelkyag Cassie: "Pretty sure Miss Smoke and I are not bound together on a metaphysical level. Even Blackpaw and I don't have to stay together. Just want to."

@rowyn
Seemed like she knew some stuff that it didn't make sense for her to know (at the time, anyway) in the wake of your telling her she was free take her cauldron and go her merry way if she wished. (OTOH, if she's from the Strange her relationship with time may be unusual.)

Perhaps I misunderstood about familiars? I thought you and Blackpaw have a bond, which could be undone if you wanted (not sure if that'd require one or both), but was still a magical process to change.

@kelkyag
Cassie: "Yeah, Miss Smoke has some sort of prophetic power. Don't know how that works."
Cassie: "Blackpaw and I have a bond, yep, and it's a process to unwind it. But either of us could do it if we wanted to. Not eternal-no-matter-what or anything. Hard for an outsider to undo it, or force us to undo it, tho."

@rowyn
"He controlled lots of folks."
Thaaaat's a problem.
(Possibly an out-of-scope-of-this-story problem, but ...)

"Elf-lord couldn't get too close to her after that."
Honor's hex attempt, perhaps?

So many elf-shaped problems.

@kelkyag Honor: "Wait what? That hex attempt maybe did something?" O.o
@Annmie But Cassie's writing again! That's something to be happy about, right?
@rowyn absolutely! I missed seeing that handwriting!

@Annmie @rowyn
Terrible and more terrible.

I worry that many more of the people the Duke claimed were and may still be squashed flat like that. 😟 Which would be something for the Queen to hate him for.

@kelkyag @Annmie Elandarel: "Elf magic of that sort does not generally outlive the elf."

@rowyn @Annmie
I continue to be dubious that the Duke is actually dead. (Or possibly the person who was acting as Duke is dead, but the person(s) effectively wielding the magic & power are not. Or ...)

But also, if there were others squashed flat who are no longer so, they too may need support and assistance in recovering.

@kelkyag Magnus: "Yeah, you never know with elfs. And I don't even know how to find his other victims." 😬
@rowyn @kelkyag Don't worry, they will come, somehow. Patients always find their ways to a witch in these parts. ^.^
@Tuftears @kelkyag Honor: "Oh no."
@rowyn @kelkyag And poor Honor will be the one who gets to mix up the potions since Cassie is still recovering! 😹
@Tuftears @rowyn
Or Lady Rayaleth, for the elf patients at least, as they're probably as dubious about outside witches as everyone else is of them. But the Duke had other non-elfs in his ... household? Peppermint, for example.
@kelkyag @Tuftears Elandarel: "Elfs are rare and difficult. Most of an elf's 'household' are not elfs."

@rowyn @Tuftears

What are the usual relationships of the non-elfs in an elf's household to the head of the household? Enslaved as Cassie was? Employed by mutual agreement and paid a fair wage? Tenants? Vassals?

Was Lady Akisika's arrival remarked on?

@kelkyag @Tuftears Elandarel: "It varies by elf. The level of mind magic used on Witch Cassie is rare; most elfs do not obliterate the minds of their minions. The Elf-Queen's household consists of employees and vassals. But the mortal emphasis on 'consent' does not translate to elf culture in the way mortals expect."
