Summer, Day Sixty-Four: Jumpier Seeker found the cottage before me, of course, and came back to let me know. “Not far now. Maybe a mile on this road.” I held out my gloved hand to her. “How does it look?” She landed, ruffling her dark glossy feathers. “Could be worse. The shutters are intact and ...

@rowyn cassie pondering when things changed, only to get distracted by magnuslet, evidence that at least some parts of that change were a while ago
@Satsuma Cassie: "Huh, yeah. Umbral's been awfully fond of that doll, come to think of it. Was a little taken aback when I gave it to her, but took a liking to it soon enough."
@rowyn and Magnus wouldn’t have suggested Cassie make it if he wasn’t at least a bit fond of Umbral either!
@Satsuma Magnus: "I sort of suggested it by accident. Really I was trying to make sure Cassie didn't give them a mini-Cassie like she'd given me."
Cassie: "But you agreed I ought to make one for them?"
Magnus: "Well, yeah. They needed one."
Cassie: "And gave me a lock of your hair to include."
Magnus: "..."
Magnus: "...Yeah, I liked them even then. I didn't want to admit it to myself, though."
@rowyn they kissed!!! and more importantly, they talked about their feelings <3
@Satsuma Magnus: "Yes!"
Magnus: "and that was TERRIFYING"
Magnus: "whew"
@rowyn @Satsuma
'Twas. And handled with bravery and grace. 💖
@kelkyag @Satsuma Magnus: "And Umbral said yes so it was *totally* with it" ❤️

@rowyn
That's one way to introduce a complicated and delicate conversation. And Gregor so kindly shepherded everyone else away. I wonder if he and Magnus talked about this beforehand, or if he's just reading the room (and the very tired new witch) well?

(Are panther ears a distinctive shape, or is Umbral in feline-ish forms a panther by default because of their coloration?)

@kelkyag Cassie: "Big cats, like panthers, have rounder and wider ears than house cats."
Cassie: "But lion/tiger/cougar/leopard etc all have pretty similar ears. I think of them as "panther" on Umbral because of their color."
@rowyn @kelkyag Who doesn't want to rub those adorable ears? ^.^
@rowyn
Umbral-as-kitten looks to've gone with house cat ears (and size), then.
@kelkyag Cassie: "Oh yes, the kitten shape was definitely a house cat kitten. Used house cat ears when he shifted to humanoid that day, too. Varies it up."
@kelkyag
Magnus: "Gregor and I had talked, yeah. Like, I hadn't said anything about him getting us some time alone. But I knew why he was maneuvering to leave us alone."
Magnus: "As far as I know, no one had talked to Blackpaw. I kinda think he was reading the room."
@rowyn
Blackpaw's good at that. And he's been present for various relevant conversations.
@rowyn impressive! but maybe don’t push so hard so quickly, Cassie?
@Satsuma Cassie: "Didn't feel as if I was pushing until I'd pushed too hard. Oops."
@rowyn yayy Rocky is back!
@Satsuma Rocky: *dances ponderously, happy to be back!*
@rowyn awwww i love honor getting a chance to get some validation & talk shop
@Satsuma Honor: "And she's so *nice*! I see why everyone was so upset that she was missing."
@rowyn
Nifty! Would that work with other crafts, if that's where one's skills lay?
@kelkyag Cassie: "Oh, sure. Mechanics vary depending on what you're working with, of course. Fiber's easier than stuff like metal or wood because fiber's naturally flexible and yielding, so it yields to witchery easily. But you could do it with other crafts if you were determined."
@rowyn @kelkyag . o O ( Origami alert dolls! )
@Tuftears @rowyn
That'd be cool. I was variously pondering braided grass/corn husk dolls, jointed (or not) wooden dolls, and pottery (maybe better for observation than patrolling, but being able to write and keep a log book has proven very useful! -- could a pottery doll be jointed, or be flexible beyond what the materials would normally allow, or log some other way?). Could Rocky have been built by a witch with mechanical knowhow? Or are the season/year limits inherent to witchcraft?
@kelkyag @Tuftears Cassie: "Doll ought to be jointed or flexible. Witchcraft is all about intent and so it really doesn't want to make things move if they're intended to be rigid. Not saying you couldn't, but bet you'd have regrets if you did."
Cassie: "Rocky wasn't built with witchcraft. You could've made something similar with witchcraft but it'd almost certainly wear out faster than Rocky does. Might be some witches as could make a magical effect that lasts for years, but don't know any."
@rowyn
GROUP HUG!
@kelkyag Cassie: "Look how well they're getting along! It's amazing."
@rowyn yesssssss! At last!

@rowyn
«"Aww." Magnus leaned over my legs, towards Umbral. "Should we pet you while you're in human form so you know we think you're just as cute like this?"»

Definitely an idea worth considering further 👀 (maybe wait till Cassie is feeling better tho)

@Satsuma Cassie: "wait wait I'm feeling better already"
@rowyn
<giggles> Poor Umbral, undermining their own dignity with excess adorability. Nobody who has skritched their tiny kitten ears will ever see them the same way again.
@kelkyag Umbral: "It's not that I mind being undignified, per se, it's just that the whole thing stops working if I remember I'm not actually a kitten."
@rowyn
Fascinating. Does that apply to other shapes, too? If you think about your form as something you're wearing rather than what you are, you can't operate it as intended?
@kelkyag
Umbral: "No, it's not--"
Umbral: *pained look*
Umbral: "So Cassie and Magnus are petting a cute kitten, and this is very sweet and innocent as long as I think 'I am an adorable kitten.'"
Umbral: "But if I think 'I am a person and two attractive humans are running their hands all over my naked body' the experience becomes dissonant and highly inappropriate."
@kelkyag
Umbral: "(To be clear, it is my thoughts which are inappropriate. They are still innocently petting a kitten.)"

@rowyn
They also know that you're a person.

There's a "fur counts as clothing" argument one could make, but if you're finding the situation inappropriate, changing that situation to one you're (all) comfortable with sounds like a good call.

@kelkyag Umbral: "Once my mind gets onto the wrong track, no argument can wrangle it back onto the right one." x_x
@rowyn
<concerned>
@kelkyag Umbral: "It's fine. I just needed to stop pretending to be a kitten at that point, and so I did."
