@rowyn
<very very quietly>
D'awwwww!
@kelkyag Honor: *internal gleeful squealing*
@rowyn
Umbral acknowledging a need for sleep, including for herself! Who'd've thunk? 💤
@kelkyag
Umbral: "Cassie has been a good influence on me."
Umbral: "...also I am more responsive to the needs of others than my own. But once I recognize that I need to let other people sleep, it reminds me that I should do this thing myself, as well."
@rowyn @kelkyag Read: Umbral needs a pet cat to take care of, in order to remind them they have needs on a more frequent basis. 😹

@rowyn
Hopeful!

Pragmatic lessons seem to've been learned. :)

Much appreciation for Rocky for building the porch. Hoping it's safe with Gren and hasn't taken any nasty tumbles into the bog.

@kelkyag Honor: "I'm just glad I get to sleep in a bed because I was figuring I'd take the floor."
@rowyn
Perhaps when things are settled and Rocky returns, it might accept a commission to add a room to the cottage, be it for patients, friends&allies on patient overwatch, guests, or an apprentice. 🏡
@kelkyag Honor: "!"
Honor: "A bigger cottage would be *so* nice."
Honor: "This cottage is great when it's just me and Seeker but as soon as there's a patient in here, it's too crowded."
@rowyn I'm glad Cassie was found, but I feel so bad for her! How difficult.
@Annmie Seeker: "She's had a very bad time of it." 😬
@rowyn memory magic very much didnt treat it last time, if my own memory serves. Cassie just couldn’t remember why she was panicking

@Satsuma @rowyn
This! Messing with Cassie's memories without her informed consent and a well-trained mind healer is a terrible plan.

Cassie's made at least one potion for curing fear (and hair color), for the adventurer who'd heard the cu sith bark thrice. That was inflicted fear, though, where Cassie's fear is based on very real experiences that should not be taken away from her.

Cassie's likely also exhausted emotionally, magically, and maybe physically. Lunch, sleep, & her own clothes?

@kelkyag @Satsuma

Umbral: "Nnngh."
Umbral: "If I'm being fair, and I *really* do not want to be fair, I can see how memory magic *could* be used to treat trauma. And even how the involuntary application of it made Cassie less alarmed by her past trauma."
Umbral: "But fuck this elf and their whole attitude on consent and any notion that more non-consensual magic is a good idea. Cassie could definitely sense something was wrong after their last use and it was a deeply harmful experience."

@rowyn @Satsuma
Yes and yes and yes.
Cassie's made it quite clear that she does not want to be poked, prodded, or edited by any elf, now or possibly ever.
@rowyn
Yay, Blackpaw snuggles and purring!
@rowyn
"Everything Maeve knew of witchcraft came from me" is not a ringing endorsement, given the fallout Cassie saw from Maeve's lack of bedside manner.
@kelkyag Honor: "Oh."
Honor: "Oh no."
Honor: "I basically don't know anything except what Maeve wrote down." 😓
@rowyn
If Maeve wrote down anything about bedside manner or reagent collection practices, neither you nor Cassie has mentioned it that I recall.
Your bedside manner is considerate of your patients, which is a fine start. Also tentative, but you're new at this and you'll gain skill and confidence with practice.
@kelkyag Honor: "...oh no I haven't even THOUGHT about bedside manner is, much less what I should be doing. ACK."
@kelkyag Honor: "Oh, and Maeve wrote a bunch about her preferred ways to collect different reagents."
Honor: "...it sounds like she didn't like pixies very much."

@rowyn
The pixies didn't much care for Maeve, either, and assumed Cassie would be just as bad.

I hope you have the opportunity to study with Cassie.

@kelkyag Honor: "...now I'm glad I haven't needed pixie fur for anything yet." 😓
Honor: "It would be so nice to learn in person from an actual witch."

@rowyn
What words did the Elf-Queen and Elandarel exchange? I suspect no one else will know.

What price did the Duke pay? He may be anything from mildly embarrassed to dead, and that may not become known either. And from the Elf-Queen's perspective, any price paid was for deceiving herself and her court, not for trespassing against Cassie.

"Mocked" is ... an interesting word choice.

Even if the Duke's plans are at an end, there's a pretty dire culture clash, now possibly worse than before.

@kelkyag
Elandarel: "Nothing I haven't heard from her before."
Elandarel: "The Elf Queen hated the Duke. I am sure she is glad to be rid of him without losing any of her own pawns, though the loss of face annoys her."

@rowyn
"Be rid of" could be dead, exiled, demoted to be someone else's vassal instead of the queen's directly, had his memory wiped and demoted to stableboy for the next century, ...

Elves have rather long lifetimes to build up to "bitch eating crackers", I suppose.

@kelkyag Elandarel: "The Duke of Crystal and Fire sought to depose the Elf Queen. She did not care to be deposed. You can see how this would pose a difficulty."

@rowyn
In a strictly hierarchical society where nobody retires or dies of old age, an ambitious subordinate trying to take their boss's job is just Tuesday. That's not worth hate.

If the Duke of Fire and Crystal had, say, personally encouraged and cultivated Andoral's sadistic tendencies, that'd be worth hate.

Things like stirring up trouble with neighboring domains could go either way.

@kelkyag Elandarel: "Mm. The Elf-Queen disagrees on that first count."
@kelkyag Elandarel: "As for the second: the Duke of Crystal and Fire regarded Andoral's sadism as a useful handle, yes."

@rowyn

Honor, the Duke didn't deny anything, or say anything about what they did or didn't do or know. They just offered a distracting thought.

Would Seeker recognize another witch's familiar as being such?

@kelkyag

Honor: "...yeah the distraction worked on me." 😳
Seeker: "I wouldn't recognize one just at a glance, no. Especially not if some elf had disguised them."

@rowyn
😟
Is that really Seeker?

Cassie had a patient who thought she was a pixie, and was doing her best to play the part -- and that seemed to be caused by accidental exposure to fairy dust, not backed up by a visual glamour. Deliberately altering someone's mind/memories to tell them they were an elf and making them look like one, too, would probably be even more effective. 😟

@kelkyag
Honor: "..."
Honor: "No, that has to be Seeker. I'm sure I'd know if something was wrong with my own familiar."
Honor: "...surely."
@rowyn
I certainly hope you can tell: you have a bond. But check, maybe?
@rowyn
Oh dear.
Trying to follow an elf-led party that's trying to stay hidden while traveling through Glimmerwood has so many ways to go wrong.
Being diverted to see Lady Akisika again might be the least problematic, depending on who else is with her this time.
😟
@kelkyag
Honor: "Were they trying to stay hidden? I thought they were all going together on the idea that the elf-royal would be safe with the adventurers and the Dark Ruler with them, not so that they could be stealthy. But maybe I missed or forgot something else?" 😓
@rowyn
... no, nobody but me said they were trying to stay hidden. Possibly that wouldn't have helped anyway.
@kelkyag
Honor: "Being stealthy seems like the sort of thing the Dark Ruler of the Underlands would be good at, but I don't know if he is or not."
