Here’s my final point about how wide the gap is between the PC and PS5’s gaming library.

Let’s say I wanted to play my old PS2 game discs on my PC. Can I do that? Well, yes, I actually can – and it’s pretty neat.

Now can I play old PC game discs on my PS5? Mostly, nope. If you could, the input options suck. And even theoretically, if PC emulation were possible, you’d be breaking Sony’s TOS.

So yeah. 😶

It’s just so strange for PC Gamer to say that the PS5 gives you access to the exact same library as PC.Let’s just consider new releases for a moment. Can I play Anger Foot on PS5?What about Nightma...

@atomicpoet also the #9thConsoleGeneration truly lacks good #games thaf are #exclusives worth buying a console for:

Neither the #JapanoBox (#PS5) nor #HaloStation (#XboxSeriesX) provide that - espechally not at their insultingly high price tags!

@atomicpoet I mean, I'm a #PCgamer (or rather #LinuxGamer) but even I sniped half a dozen #Xbox360's to #mod and a huge crate of games over the years because the value proposition was (and still is) so good.

The only game unplayable on it per design is #Titanfall and aside from the few *Xbox 360 E "Winchester" versions, all 360s are easily moddable...

  • Also I kinda am angry at myself for not having picked up a #used #Wii and #WiiU when they were dirt cheap and one could get one for a used copy of FIFA or a €5 bill...

@kkarhan At this point, Linux gaming is almost on par with Windows.

Almost my entire library works on Linux.

@atomicpoet @kkarhan so far the only ones I've found not to work are cases where the developer specifically decided to 'block' linux through e.g poor or purposefully malicious anticheat or DRM measures, especially the latter category will often crash on purpose when it detects it's being run in proton/wine

@anthropy @atomicpoet exactly THAT

Same goes for #Software for #Windows on #Wine: #Microsoft specifically integrates #undocumented stealth checks to #brick #MicrosoftOffice from running under Wine!

Kevin Karhan :verified: (@[email protected])

@[email protected] the only pain-points I've seen are at fault of #devs and #publishers using #malware aka. intrusive #DRM & #KernelLevel-#AntiCheat... - Which *both* can't work since there is *no way in hell* one could perform *"Integrity Checks"* and attestations as is [state-of-the-art]( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7VwtOrwceo&t=3m52s ) with #GamingConsoles... - Also Anti-Cheat should inherently *never* be done #ClientSide but only #ServerSide as that's the only system the platform holder/publisher/debeloper can control!

@kkarhan @atomicpoet there are probably ways around it, because you can just copy all the actual windows libraries into proton/wine as override libraries, and then it should act basically entirely like on actual windows and not just emulated windows, I think you could even copy ntoskrnl.exe and such, at some point it's basically running windows on Linux similarly to how WSL2 on Windows works

@anthropy the problem is less of a technical possibility but that it would taint the setup with unlicensed (or rather violating the EULA of Windows) parts, thus making it not feasible...

I think it'll only stall the inevitable: #Microsoft cancelling #OneTimePurchase #Sotware in favour of more profitable #Cloud & #SaaS-offerings...

@kkarhan @atomicpoet yea I mean wineHQ/steam/etc would never be able to pre-package that, but if you really want to get something working on linux and you don't care about using binary blobs, that's one way to do it I guess. I do kinda hope microsoft just drops windows at some point because right now it just feels like they're bullying the users and trying to see what they can get away with

@anthropy @atomicpoet it's only a matter of time till the falling ROI & revenue will get #Windows axed like #MSDOS...

  • It's just that I don't want to rely on using copied/extracted Windows files nor naving to use a #VM to workaround bs engineering decisions...

@kkarhan @atomicpoet personally I have not used any windows on any of my systems in the last 12 years, I have not needed it, everything that's not available on my platform is just optional to me in the end, there are plenty of alternatives, even 12 years ago when things were still 'rough' in that sense, but it's been at least 10 years since I felt like missing out on anything.

There are plenty things on Linux that Windows doesn't have, in the end it's all about the ecosystem you decide to pick.

@anthropy @kkarhan I used to be a big Linux user but I was tired of using consoles to do all my gaming.

But now that the Linux gaming experience is almost on par with Windows, I’ll probably migrate to Linux next year.

@atomicpoet @kkarhan yea things have definitely improved-- and I do have to admit I've never been a really big gamer, mostly sandbox games, and stuff like Factorio have ran well on Linux for a really long time, and since like 2019 even things like Space Engineers which was notoriously Windows-reliant due to its DirectX11 + XNA + .NET library usage, have worked pretty much flawlessly on Linux. Proton really changed the gaming scene in that sense, it's amazing to see what Valve has done for Linux.
