Mass shootings in the US:

2014: 273
2015: 336
2016: 383
2017: 348
2018: 336
2019: 417
2020: 610
2021: 690
2022: 647
2023: 656

So far in 2024: 385

We do not have to live like this. No other country on the planet does.

@rbreich I wish I could move out of the US right now, and live with my Swiss girlfriend... every year the US just seems to get worse and worse..
@rbreich Well, there’s American exceptionalism!
@rbreich Somewhere a gun manufacturer is laughing.

@rbreich
It comes down to:

sensible gun laws vs. profit.

@rbreich
the definition of “mass shooting” seems to change quite often.

nowadays it seems to be “number of rounds fired” whether or not anyone is hit.

but it makes for great ratings on the news stations, and also makes the government happy since people are scared and easier to control.

@rbreich
Wait a minute.

So, mass shootings in the US nearly doubled between Trump's first and last year .. While they are down over Biden's years? (See 👆)

Why is THAT not a headline?
#GunControlNow

@rbreich has anybody checked out the effectiveness of prohibition....
@everyday_nate_04 @rbreich
Australian here.
Yes.
@railmaps @everyday_nate_04 @rbreich I can additionally confirm that the Firearms Act 1968, and it's '97 amendments, has been quite effective.
@rbreich Oddly, it seems your politicians accept funding in dollars from sources who rate their compliance.
@rbreich the actual arrest of the father is the first step in the right direction. Far too long have the owners of the weapons been treated too weak. It isn’t the loose laws alone. It’s the easy access in the homes, that allows pupils the access to their parents weapons (and ammunition!).

@rbreich

We do until we vote every single Republican out of office.

@rbreich
Nothing in the Constitution says we cannot enact strict laws on gun ownership, the types of guns citizens are allowed to own or the type of firearms that are legally allowed to be sold in the US.
There is no reason to sell guns to anyone who wants one, or 100 for that matter. We have an overfunded military to protect us as well as a national guard.

@Sector9 @rbreich

Here’s a good way to respect the principles and spirit of the 2nd Amendment:
every American should be entitled to own as many flintlock muzzle loaded rifles as they want.

No other guns should be permitted.
#NRA

@JamminJerry @rbreich Interesting patern here. Notice quite the increase, especially after 2020? Hmmmm!
@tinygirl @rbreich I didn't want to say it, but yes I do. I am hopiing this year stays under 600. it will be interesting to see if it does.

@rbreich WHY UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS ARE JUST AS UNLIKELY AS EVER, UNFORTUNATELY

https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1ss9rrr?new_post=true

I'm a leftist (Libertarian-Socialist), who votes progressive, because I live under an "elected" government, and I had thought I had purged the MSNBC/CNN Nation from my friends...

@rbreich No other country lives like this- Yes, but keep in mind that the US Commerce Dept (and the President if Trump wins) works hard to export this system. The US gun lobby, through its various financial institutions is trying hard to make Canada another gun market. They are supporting the election of Pierre Poilievre and fighting Trudeau.
@rbreich when I read statistics the first information I am looking for is the source.
@rbreich The news from yesterday made my stomach sick. 😭
@rbreich But, but, but... surely the right to own any gun is more important than kids lives right?
@rbreich The gop/nra/fascist right wingnut bastards are responsible for EVERY child killed by guns.
@rbreich Now and again people rais the spectre of civil war in the US. No need to do that. It's already here. Just very stretched out over time and space. If you put it all together: the militias in the streets, the storming of the seat of government, the general high level of gun violence, the mass shootings, people shooting at presidential candidates. The only thing that's missing is clear frontlines.
@rbreich
i'm honestly shocked that the US hasn't changed laws yet to limit weapons in most if not all states. I guess the gun lobby really has the nation in a chokehold.
@rbreich if it wasn’t for dead children this would be a joke. If it was politicians it would be funny.
How Japan has almost eradicated gun crime

Japan has one of the lowest rates of gun crime in the world, and the rules around ownership are very strict.

BBC News

This is unbelievable. In any other country, any single one of those would dominate the news, but in the US they're so common that nobody even notices them anymore.

How can life be so cheap in one of the richest countries in the world?

@mcv

I don't feel like diving into how we got here, but I will just quickly note that it's a relatively recent thing ... about 30 years.

30 years ago the GOP wasn't pro-mass-shooter. 30 years ago, even crazy gun nuts were not fans of the AR-15. 30 years ago, Republican "Law and Order" included going after _white_ gun criminals (such as in Ruby Ridge).

It may feel like it has been this way in the USA forever, but it really hasn't. It's a new thing.

@isaackuo

I've heard that before the 1970s, the NRA was in favour of gun licensing. And then a group of extremists took over the NRA and it became about irresponsible gun ownership.

Since the late 1980s, the Republicans have been focused on demonizing the Democrats while pushing themselves towards even more extreme positions, and the conservative media has since then done a thorough job brainwashing Ameriica.

But even then, why the extreme rise of mass shootings? Are they all brainwashed conservatives?

@rbreich
There are other countries like that. There's Syria, Israel & Ukraine (neither of those two by choice, of course), Ethiopia (the media is keeping very quiet about the genocide there), and I think Somalia.
@rbreich the worst thing is that this is what happens when, as a society, the bonuses of the CEOs of the weapons industry are deemed more important than the lives of ordinary citizens, even when those citizens are innocent children.
@rbreich
I'm a Brit. I don't understand how a law about a 'well regulated militia' force justifies mass unregulated gun ownership. Lots of countries in Europe have reserve forces whose members keep service issue guns and ammo at home. In locked cabinets. To be used only when ordered by a superior.
@therightarticle

@pthane @therightarticle @rbreich

The gun nuts always ignore the first half of the Second Amendment. Instead of a well regulated militia, they want criminals, extremists and terrorists to have unrestricted access to guns.

@mcv
Well yeah nuts will be nuts but why do the states and federal governments tolerate it? It seems like the US is still living the 19th century wild west fantasy.
@therightarticle @rbreich

@pthane @therightarticle @rbreich

It's not a 19th century wild west fantasy, it's a caricature of one.

Who do governments tolerate it? Because the gun lobby is well-funded and powerful.

@mcv
Be nice to see a president tell the NRA 'thanks for the money guys but I'm still going to ban guns'. What they going to do? Sue for failing to take a bribe, or start a war?
@therightarticle @rbreich
@rbreich What does the proposed 2nd Amendment repeal amendment look like?
@rbreich this is ABSOLUTELY beyond barbaric!
@rbreich We need more Weapons.
@rbreich Because no other country on the planet is so enamoured with the worship of firearms. They seem to be an essential part of every American household - I'd be willing to bet that the Reich family own at least one. So your heartfelt plea that "We must do something about this" begs the question who?
It would appear to be the case that, no matter which Party is in power, they shy away from taking action to stop this mindless slaughter.
Are they afraid of losing votes, or just plain gutless?
@rbreich actually, we do, because lots of deranged people here have a gun fetish and would rather die than give up their guns
@rbreich Yeah we need more mass stabbings. Maybe some good ol fashioned cricket battings. Got a loicense for those sunglasses? Ye could out an eye out with 'em, innit
@rbreich Tell that to the Palestinians, a daily occurrence using US made armaments.
@rbreich under bikamala numbers are doubling. Just observing.

@rbreich
As a foreigner, do you guys think this is an issue of having access to guns, or a deeper underlying issue? Like culture?

In many regions in my country all people are armed (despite it being illegal) but nothing of this sort happens. Yes, shootings due to personal or tribal conflict happen but not mass shootings or school shootings.

It's definitely more than just the guns. Lots of countries have guns, though none quite as many as the US. But that's not only because of the easy availability of guns and the lack of regulation around them (though that's certainly a factor), but also the culture around guns, the irresponsible gun ownership; and the culture itself. My impression is that lots of Americans are angry at or afraid of each other, and their media tell one half that the other half is about to destroy or corrupt their country and they may have to fight for their country, their culture, their race, or whatever. And when told to fight, they look at what they have, and they see guns.

When you've got a hammer, every problem starts looking like a nail. And their hammer is guns. So they apply that to every problem. American police is also mostly trained to shoot, rather than de-escalate. American criminals can get very violent. It's everywhere.

Restricting access to guns will absolutely help, but much more important is a different attitude towards guns.

@rbreich was just discussing with a family member how I don't recall exactly why, but on the day of Columbine I recall being home from school for some reason and watching the live news reports in horror from my living room. Today the horror and disgust are still there, but there's a sense of routine that I'd NEVER have been able to imagine back then.🤢

@rbreich

thats an increase of 48 shootings per year
