@amalia12 "anger is a sin that you need to squash" is something authoritarians say in order to keep you under control. It also rarely applies to them (they'll just claim they aren't actually angry!)

It's also, coincidentally, one of the only allowable emotions for men under toxic masculinity. No wonder so many men feel completely trapped. Also the very first accusation leveled against Black women whenever they speak up about anything.

@wilbr @amalia12 Precisely this. Anger is such a misunderstood and mischaracterised emotion. Its basic function is to alert you to something wrong. The fact it can also energise you to deal with the problem is a bonus.
@Orthia @amalia12 I've been operating for years on the (therapeutic?) assumption that as human animals we can't simply cut off some part of ourselves and pretend it doesn't exist and be healthy. Some research suggests that part of the problem of priests doing sexual abuse is celibacy itself. People who seriously need anger management often deny being angry. Patriarchy harms us all by making tenderness and sadness and fear "unmasculine" and loving playing with your friends "gay" etc.
As I like to say, hatred is a precious part of us. Those who control your hatred control you. Don't let them take control. Protect your hatred, cultivate it, hate carefully and deliberately. They'll never see it coming.

Excellently said. What a wonderful articulation by yourself and a #TerryPratchett

I don’t think it consciously registered for me when I was reading his work but I’m sure the reading helped seed the thinking.

@amalia12 I wonder if he ever learned about what Gailman did behind his back. And whether the militant decency was his way of dealing with it.
@amalia12 My dad taught me that. He always told me to join a union. It’s what they’re for.
@amalia12 Went to find the source to reblog, thought I'd share in case anyone else wanted that too: https://serialephemera.tumblr.com/post/636666887988740096/thematically-speaking-the-most-important-thing/amp

@amalia12 In my language that would be 'militant fatsoen', I think.

@amalia12

I once read that humor terrifies tyrants so much more than rage, because humor is anger *under control*.

Terry Pratchett has recently become my model for that.
