Signal is good, this interview is good, and this photographer is good because they made Meredith look like PJ Harvey.

Signal Is More Than Encrypted Messaging. Under Meredith Whittaker, It’s Out to Prove Surveillance Capitalism Wrong

On its 10th anniversary, Signal’s president wants to remind you that the world’s most secure communications platform is a nonprofit. It’s free. It doesn’t track you or serve you ads. It pays its engineers very well. And it’s a go-to app for hundreds of millions of people.

WIRED
@evacide "you're not rid of me" is certainly apt
@evacide #photographer is Dina Litovsky, thanks for telling us about those great portraits as it allowed me to discover a great photographer! https://dinalitovsky.com/
@patpro I am on Team Dina.

@evacide

Her work is amazing.

@Mikal

#PostOfTheWeek (season 1):
TEN YEARS AGO, WIRED published a news story about how two little-known, slightly ramshackle encryption apps called RedPhone and TextSecure were merging to form something called Signal. Since that July in 2014, Signal has transformed from a cypherpunk curiosity—created by an anarchist coder, run by a scrappy team working in a single room in San Francisco, spread word-of-mouth by hackers competing for paranoia points.

@patpro @evacide Thank you so much for sharing! Her work is lovely.
@evacide I would have sworn that's an album cover, goodness.
@evacide OMG YES!!! You nailed it. I'd been wondering what that photo reminded me of. <3
@evacide she looks like a young Elizabeth Taylor to me
@evacide wow, you're very correct on all three points.
@evacide lol I just realized I have the same secret crush on Meredith that I had on PJ back in the day
@evacide Meredith is badass on all relevant levels.
@evacide
Interesting article, thanks. I've shared it to friends on signal
@evacide only with the arrest of Telegram guy I became curious enough about the world of messaging (beyond WhatsApp that is). This is very informative, and convinced me to try and switch over to Signal. Thank you.
@evacide Uh Huh Her. Am I right?

Swimmies is a tiny hack that creates ASCII animations within your web browser’s Elements Inspector. It’s running live, right here on this website. (Viewable on desktops.)

@evacide Well she IS a rock star 😎
I love to read/ listening to her, she has this cool aura about her

@Mer__edith
@signalapp
@evacide

Yes! That's a fantastic article with photography to match.

However, at risk of being brutal, nobody should give a sh*t who Meredith looks like, nor how good she looks.

Instead, we should all be deeply appreciative of Meredith's work with the team at Signal, as well as Eva's at the EFF.

Further, we should show our appreciation by throwing a few dollars towards Signal and the EFF. (@eff)

For 10 bucks apiece, we can help ward off a dystopian, surveillance state.

@evacide Hokey smokes, she looks like she's gonna be dropping her next colab with Nick Cave!
@evacide Andy Greenberg is one of my favorite authors.
@evacide thank you for the prompt to donate.
@evacide I thought her take on AI and surveillance was really insightful: "Well, AI is the narrative. It’s not the technology. Surveillance and infrastructure are the material conditions". (Also, cool pics.)

@evacide This is a great interview, thanks for sharing!

And I was not expecting my former employer to show up in here 🙈

@evacide Signal is good, really good, but it isn't great, not yet. Some things don't just work, at least not in my own experience.

Video calling is shockingly bad still, audio is hit or miss in it, but usually miss.

Messages sometimes don't send, and I've been told a few times that messages that have been sent to me just never make it. I'm not using another proxy or anything, just default install.

On the whole it's my preferred solution, but it can't be my only solution, not yet.
