Summer, Day Sixty-Four: Jumpier Seeker found the cottage before me, of course, and came back to let me know. “Not far now. Maybe a mile on this road.” I held out my gloved hand to her. “How does it look?” She landed, ruffling her dark glossy feathers. “Could be worse. The shutters are intact and ...

<worries a little about whether that description of the process has Honor leaning a little too hard on Miss Smoke's work>
<wonders whether and/or where Miss Smoke's intentions appear in the process -- certainly she has opinions! -- and whether she's willing to assist in making this potion for this patient>
<detours to wondering about Miss Smoke's intentions>
@rowyn not sure what the point of having the conversation at all is, if the plan is for both of you to forget it immediately
@Satsuma Princen Elandarel: "Obviously, we didn't realize before we had the conversation that having it would be a mistake."
@rowyn adds another person to the waiting list for Honor’s clarity potions
@kelkyag @Satsuma Honor: "...well, I've got six brewing now..."
@rowyn
Nit: Per Cassie's journal, Cassie didn't develop the mind-clearing potion(s) because of her encounter with (apparently) Elandarel, but because she was worried about possible demonic influence. What her mind-clearing potion revealed to her was the covered-up conversation with (apparently) Elandarel (and no apparent demonic influence). (Also some lingering influence from earlier encounters, IIRC.)
@kelkyag Umbral: "I know this is what she said was her reasoning at the time, but I think she was worried about demonic influence because she could remember having contact with a demon and could not remember an elf. I feel as if some part of her knew something was wrong and was trying to come up with a plausible explanation."
Umbral: "For the sake of brevity, I didn't get into all that today."
@rowyn
<nod>
I'd rather you didn't get accused of inconsistent explanations later in the conversation. The "logic" is going to get convoluted enough ...
@rowyn
<relieved>
Elandarel still has a lot of explaining to do, but Umbral going first may help, and they seem to be on that.
<hopes everyone present is on the same metaphorical page soon>
@kelkyag Umbral: *gets Cassie's journal so everyone can be on the same literal page.*
@rowyn
Also useful!
Not enthused about even this theoretically friendly elf knowing where Cassie's journals are, given how much effort various elfs have put into messing with Cassie, but I appreciate that having some solid evidence to point to is useful.
@kelkyag Umbral: "...also I really need to show everyone that I didn't attack their elf guest for no particular reason." 😓
@rowyn whelp! that’s…honestly a pretty reasonable response so seeing that level of glamour/reality warping going on in Cassies house after she was kidnapped but definitely not a helpful one

@Satsuma Also, Umbral has read the entirety of Cassie's journal *very* recently.

Flickr
@rowyn yeah there’s a lot of “dont trust elves around cassie” in that journal 😬
@Satsuma @rowyn
Elves can change their appearance at will, but how common is that hair color choice? If that's the same elf who bespelled Cassie & made her forget their conversation, they've got a whole lot of explaining to do.
@kelkyag @Satsuma Umbral: "I have never seen this hair color on another person. Elf or otherwise."
@rowyn
Is the Duke of Fire and Crystal the same as the Duke of Crystal and Fire who tried to take over the Blastfire Bog? Or related?
(Or a certain theoretically dead prince?)
@kelkyag Same person!

@kelkyag Well, same duke.

The duke could theoretically be the same prince, but this part is not clear.

@rowyn
Yes, whether that's the same exiled prince who was after Cassie in her homeland is still carefully unclear. I don't trust the death reports, and don't think Cassie did, either. She may have more information now than the readers do.
@rowyn odd sense of politeness, to ask before entering but not before laying down their own magic all over a strange witches space
@Satsuma Yibanathi: "Yeah, elfs are not good about asking mortals for permission. Honestly pleased that they remembered to ask before entering."
@rowyn this does not seem good 😬
@Satsuma Fanish: "Elfs rarely are." 😬

@Satsuma @rowyn
Not good at all.

Though now I'm more convinced these are Cassie and Blackpaw, more or less. Maybe someone else, too. And another attempted fae invasion in progress.

@rowyn
<warm fuzzies> 🌹

@rowyn
<tangent>

Pondering Miss Smoke, and Rocky, and Pebble, and the alert dolls, and the serpent yarn, and summonable demons, and familiars, and mental and emotional manipulation, and ... I have philosophical, moral, and/or ethical questions. Where are the lines between "people" (ill-defined) and very fancy tools ("things")? (Possibly variable by perspective or loudly disagreed about.)

@rowyn
Miss Smoke and her cauldron were available for sale (with only one local prospective buyer when Miss Smoke was defined as a witch's assistant).
Gren says Rocky needs a keeper and to be given tasks, but Rocky can also want things for itself, and design and implement them.
What is the demon & summoner relationship? I don't think it's appeared on the page yet, but mental influence of the summoner on the demon has been mentioned, as well as (Tartarus) demons being manipulative.

@kelkyag
Gren thinks of Rocky as similar to a working dog: will not do well without things to do and will not do well without someone to look after it.

Cassie regarded the alert dolls in a similar light, though alert dolls generally have less autonomy than Rocky. But the Magnus-doll came out with more than usual.

Cassie regarded Miss Smoke as a person, leading to Cassie telling Miss Smoke on the day she got the cauldron that Cassie would help Miss Smoke leave if she wanted to go.

@rowyn
Rocky as a working dog may not be wrong, but maybe it just needs to learn writing, negotiation, and budgeting, and it could be a full member of society and a professional carpenter who also enjoys traveling and needs to see a mechanic rather than a doctor.

The alert dolls other than Magnuslet seem much closer to running a program than making decisions, yes. It'll be interesting to see what Magnus's doll does while out adventuring.

@rowyn
Cassie treats Miss Smoke as a person, albeit one with a very focused job; I'm curious how Miss Smoke's bond with Cassie compares with Blackpaw's. Anna seemed to think of Miss Smoke as part of the cauldron, a tool. The demon who sold the cauldon to Anna (and possibly made it), probably similar, though maybe demons have rather different views on personhood? (Miss Smoke also seems to be gaining capabilities at a good clip, though is that learning and growing, or powering up with use?)
@rowyn
<rereads> I misremembered: an adventurer brought Anna the cauldron from the Strange. They probably didn't think of Miss Smoke as a person, if they noticed her at all. Someone(s) presumably made and/or enchanted the cauldron, which may've included bringing Miss Smoke into being. Or maybe magical beings spontaneously appear in the Strange. Demons seem to have children, but the mechanical folks in the Strange ...?

@kelkyag Okay, it's really weird that both of us thought a demon had sold Miss Smoke's cauldron to Bits & Bobs. o_o

Miss Smoke: *chooses not to share how she came to be or why she's with the cauldron*

@rowyn
<side-eyes Miss Smoke>

You are going right after Old Witch Maeve on the list of beings likely involved in Cassie being dragged back into Elf Issues. (Maybe not deliberately involved, but ... awfully convenient and tightly targeted.)

@kelkyag The summoner-demon relationship really depends on the individuals and varies from "we structured this well and it's fine" to "this is a complete disaster for one or possibly both parties" and everywhere in between.

The potential for "complete disaster" is why summoning is so controversial in the setting. Underlands summoners and demons from the Strange generally get the balance right.

@rowyn
Summoning an actively hostile being who's been trained to be deceptive and manipulative certainly invites disaster for the summoner. Presumably the summoner thinks they know enough to avoid that.

Given gates and political relations, I wonder why anyone in the Underlands would still summon a demon from the Strange (or why those demons would put up with that), when they could just visit or write a letter.

@kelkyag (I also think about this stuff a lot. 😊)

@rowyn
Good to know! I'm not sure whether to ask outright or wait to see what else falls out as you write. :)

Please be warned that I was in the habit of talking with @aldersprig about her writing A Lot. Please never feel obliged to respond, and also feel free to tell me to knock it off.
