Trump illegally uses Foo Fighters' music, and they say no.

Trump illegally uses Celine Dion's music, and she says no.

Trump illegally uses Abba's music and they say no.

Trump illegally uses the hit song "Seven Nation Army", and Jack White's response is clear as day.

@randahl

Which ABBA song did he use?

Money money money is the only one that seems appropriate to me...

ABBA joins music artists demanding Trump stop playing their songs

Legendary Swedish band ABBA became the latest set of musicians calling on the Trump campaign to stop using their music during former President Trump's rallies.

Fox News
@randahl @Brit_In_Moldova Indeed, and "The Winner Takes It All" although I'm sure he didn't realize that song is about Harris ...
@roelgrif there are so many really good ABBA songs but this one and Tiger are two of my favorites.

@randahl

Why doesn't he stay honest on brand, and play some Alt-Right hits during his rallies?

These artists would be happy for the national exposure, and #DonOld would make clear what he stands for?

@yacc143 @randahl
But are there any?

@ditol @randahl
Ok, I presume, but here in Europe there are actually โ€œNaziโ€ rock festivals, so I assumed you have them too?

Our right extremists have discovered music as a propaganda tool long before there was even such a thing as social media or TikTok. It's a win-win situation for the right, the scene gets money for selling tickets/merch/cds/etc with their propaganda.

@yacc143 @randahl
Ok, but honestly, our European Neo-Nazi rock is a niche in the music business. Nothing for the masses. And it's of poor quality too. What I mean: you cannot play it at the rallies without marginalise yourself. I'm not speaking of politics, just for purely aestetic reasons. ;)

@ditol @randahl

Ah, but the creepy old weirdo tends to marginalize himself every time he drops his mask and stops playing the role he wants to project to the outside world, and the real #Donold creeps out of his husk.

Notice how #Trump is backpedalling on the highly popular (with billionaires and other sociopaths) #project2025 ๐Ÿ˜

So why not more of this refreshing honesty in marketing.

@ditol @yacc143 @randahl
Seems they could use Kid Rock and a few country music acts without issue, but keep insisting on using whatever they want instead. They just take.
@randahl do they not know licensing existence

@randahl How is DonOLD using the music illegally? Doesn't he pay royalties? Does he need an extra licence?

If musicians don't want to be played on trump rallies or not, it seems there is not much they can do, can they?

@torstentorsten the key reason is, some use of music may reflect back on the artist. So even though everyone can legally LISTEN to someone's music, that does not mean that anyone can use the same music for ANY purpose.

It works the same way for all types of art. In Denmark for instance, there is a sculpture of The Little Mermaid which every tourist takes pictures of, but that does not give you the right to use a picture of this sculpture in a political campaign, in movies, on posters, etc.

@randahl Okay, I didn't know this.

But has there ever been a trial about music being used 'illegally' by a political party? There seems to be a long history of songs used by political parties against their authors will (e.g. here: https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-lists/stop-using-my-song-35-artists-who-fought-politicians-over-their-music-75611/), but I couldn't find one trial actually.

Stop Using My Song: 35 Artists Who Fought Politicians Over Their Music

A look back at the many musicians who have told politicians to stop using their songs during their campaigns.

Rolling Stone
@torstentorsten @randahl we need a politician (or hell, a musician running for office for funsies) to use Disney songs in all their ads and rallies. Disney's lawyers will win for us

@randahl Seems like a trial would be hard to win for the musicians (https://news.northeastern.edu/2024/07/17/music-at-political-rallies-trump/)

But what musicians can do is make a statement. (See Jack White in your first posting =) )

Can Donald Trump or Joe Biden play whatever music they want at a rally or convention? Legal expert says itโ€™s more complicated

Expert explains the complicated legality of Donald Trump and Joe Biden playing music at political rallies.

Northeastern Global News

@randahl

And no lies in that statementโ€ฆ none at all.

@randahl Yeahbut he doesn't take any notice when people say "no" to him and there's never any come-back, so why give up on a winning formula? Sure they can sue him, but what's one more lawsuit amongst thousands?
@randahl Don't MAGA have their own music? Or is it too shitty and unfun to be used?

@randahl

I would love to see all the artists who've been illegally used by Trump, band together into a temporary super-group, and release a whole album of catchy earworms on the theme of "Donald Trump is weird"

Imagine a large percentage of the world's population singing against him! Flashmobs outside his rallies!

@randahl The loser who thinks rules and laws do not apply to him, uses works from artists for his scam campaign without their consent? Like, as any robber baron venture capitalist do? Say it isnโ€™t so.

/s

@randahl He tried to use Fortunate Son by John Fogerty too, and he said no! John Fogerty was drafted in Vietnam unlike Draft Dodging Trump.
@randahl Jack White is sound, I hope all these lawsuits drain the Orange fucker dry, it's the only way he will be stopped.
Trump must feel consequences for once

@randahl

Sue the news organisations for "news" stories that use the music.

@randahl
How are these artists getting around statutory licences?
@randahl so all he has left is kid rock? Someone who chose his stage name when he was about fifteen?

@randahl
Best response ever! ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿผ

Every time DonOLD comes up with some stupid stuff somebody should just quote Jack White.

@randahl from the "law and order" president none the less who'd have guessed.

Next he'll be doing campaign promotion videos and servicemens cemeteries.

@randahl They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. The line must be drawn here! This far; no farther!
