Big Journalism is engaged in a parody of fact checking at this point.

Trump gets ho-hum corrections -- often granularly parsed to give him endless benefits of the doubt -- and the fact-checkers don't even pretend to get to every lie.

Democrats get granular parsing, too. But the goal is to find falsehoods and never, ever give the benefit of the doubt.

Fact-checking is a sadly broken both-sides (even when one is lying) enterprise.

@dangillmor

Not trying to dispute you here, because I agree with you. But a little curious is there are any recent examples (the past week) where this might be the case.

@dangillmor

Thanks, I'm not on bluesky. This is helpful.

While the journalist from the Post probably didn't feel like they could print that Trump would surely lead another insurrection, they could have at least referenced what happened the last time he refused to accept.

Check out Politfact coverage for Kamala Harris statement that Trump is planning on cutting Medicare. Even though every budget he submitted as president included cuts (though they were never enacted) and the project 2025 plan calls for cuts, they rated her statement as false.
Harris misses the mark in saying Trump intends Medicare cuts

On the campaign trail, both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have painted former President Donald Tr

@dangillmor
Also, when they FINALLY ask him a question to clarify something, they let him lie again. Like this response when he was asked about his accusation that Harris used #AI to increase the crowd size.
@spocko @dangillmor You can’t exactly call Fox “News” journalism, but every news source does the same. It’s infuriating.
@jadag88 @dangillmor I've worked preparing both executives and politicans to talk to the press. The methods that are used to frustrate the press can be taught. The pressures that are used by Trump to get the press to not ask further question have been used by others. Trump is special in how he uses conscious lying all the time.
Also, he uses vauge answers to questions so he won't be pinned down. "When will you release your policy?" In 2 weeks.

@spocko Your work on preparing people to talk to the press reminded me of this scene from Bull Durham—Crash Davis giving interview tips to Ebby Calvin LaLoosh.

#BullDurham #InterviewTips

@spocko @dangillmor The fascists playbook: acuse others of crimes you (intend to) commit yourself.
@heuveltop @dangillmor yes this is something that Trump does all the time. The phrase is "every accusation is an confession."

@dangillmor

This is a great point. Big corporate journalism is flailing. They are trying to co-opt all of the norms of journalism and pervert them to their goal of influencing the public through dis-information.

But we are on to them now. With every ham handed new attempt they just further demolish their credibility. What's left, much like Trump himself, is a tire old con with a tired old bag of tricks.

@dangillmor

"No, he never said '2'. He's just said '1+1' every week for the past year."

@dangillmor #AltText4You

From the Washington Post, by Amy Gardner:

“Donald Trump says he will refuse to accept the election result if he loses again,“ Biden said. But that’s not true. Trump just hasn’t said that he would accept. And he has previously said the only way he loses is if the Democrats cheat.

@dangillmor „…And he has previously said the only way he loses is if the Democrats cheat…“
Well, that is exactly what happened: Everything was going smoothly and then the other party is going with a different candidate! That's cheating if I ever saw cheaters! You can't just change the horse while the race is going on, that's dishonest and stealing the election once again, this time even before the voting! This is illegal… or it should be!
@Ulan_KA, you're taking the piss, aren't you?

@briancs I'm German, so I can sefely mock US Politics. We still have democracy - ironically because US soldiers 80 years ago risked and many even lost their lifes to reinstall democracy here.

Now I see that MAGA-Volk with a dumbed-down version of FĂĽhrer and an at least as dumbed-down version of Fascism. And wonder If in "1000 years" I or my descendants need to reinstall democracy in the Amercan Reich.

An exploration on how journalism failed to oppose fascism in the run up to WW2, and the parallels to today.

"You cannot fact check your way out of fascism". And the idea "fascism is an existential threat to journalists, they have a right to defend themselves instead of play acting objectivity".

The couch joke may have done more good than a thousand fact checking exercises.

@dangillmor Looki g online at the history of candidates for president that have lied to the public. I wasn't amazed to find out amost every one of them has lied to the American people.

@dangillmor

Did Trump think we wouldn’t know that he wouldn’t accept?

Oh, for a sec I forgot how dumb is. How silly of me.

@dangillmor this is the kind of stupidity that made me cancel my subscription.
@dangillmor Did the journalist in this screenshot never take a language course that required the ability to infer? Funny thing is, her corrections are as damning as the president's summary, so what was the point?
@dangillmor So their deep relationship with proven wisdom has somehow let slip through the cracks the fact that trump has already said the cheating is ongoing, and thus, he is free from accepting the results of the election already. Infuriating. It all looks like malpractice to me.

@dangillmor I’m no great expert on fact checking methodology but this from the BBC has a certain stench about it. A distinct lack of reference to Trump’s history in the analysis suggests a similar lack of critical thinking to the pro nazi press mentioned by others here. In Trump’s case previous actions speak.

Six Kamala Harris claims fact-checked https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c785n2n9334o

Fact-checking six of Kamala Harris's campaign claims

BBC Verify examined claims made by Harris, about her record and Trump's on the economy, abortion and immigration.

@dangillmor can someone point out to this “journalist” the next 4 rallies for Trump are in high KKK cities and he is meeting these guys and formulating plans
