The University of California is banning masks in the middle of one of the largest summer COVID surges of the pandemic. Unacceptable.

University of California bans encampments and face masks

President of university said policies are for ‘a safe, inclusive climate’ after pro-Palestinian protests swept across US

The Guardian

Here's the list of things banned from University of California.

It says "no person shall wear a mask with the intent of
intimidating any person or group, or for the purpose of evading identification."

Unclear if it includes wearing masks for COVID protection or health reasons.

Mask bans are bad even if only targeted to law breakers because they:

- Stigmatize masks and increase harassment of mask wearers

- Let police (who aren't doctors) subjectively decide who can wear a mask for health reasons

- Increase profiling

- Violate first amendment rights

@luckytran
- and help spread disease

- and completely screw us over for the next pandemic

Honestly, it's like there was a fire so now we can't have smoke alarms because their beeping is annoying.

@freequaybuoy @luckytran The problem of selective enforcement and profiling is a big concern. People protesting against whatever the police don’t like will get their masks targeted.
@freequaybuoy @luckytran It's like if schools stopped evacuating for fire alarms because they were afraid kids might try to get out of classes by pulling the alarm.
@freequaybuoy @luckytran
While continuing to screw us over for this pandemic. It’s not as if we’re not in the middle of the biggest Covid surge since 2022.

@luckytran Why can't we just wear masks BECAUSE WE WANT TO?

What a bullshit "free country".

@luckytran This appears to be VERY CLEAR FOR ANY MALICIOUS INTENT...

@luckytran I think it’s fairly clear that masking for health is allowed.

The head for the bullet point is “Masking to conceal identity.”

@luckytran It doesn't say anything about for disease prevention, only for intimidation. I think the wording probably means ski masks, rather than N95. Use the Smokey Yunik defence: "It doesn't say here that I CAN'T wear a mask for health reasons!"

@luckytran

That’s a very vague definition. How can it be proved that evading identification is the goal? If I was participating in a protect or march, I’d be masking for my own safety.

@luckytran And during wildfire season.

@luckytran

Now we wait for the first junior or senior who needs an N95 and sues. Or a professor who is tenured and immune-compromised.

@luckytran Fuck these protestors!

@Scienceisnotopinions @luckytran

why are you blaming the protestors?

you're OK with genocide?

@luckytran power kills people, not virus :(
@luckytran That's surprising coming out of California, since that is a Democrat run state. However, I wouldn't outright ban it, but say those who choose to wear it thay can do that.
@luckytran
Totally unacceptable , 1000 people died last week in the U.S. from Covid.

@luckytran
The University?

That seems unbelievable.

@luckytran "I'm not wearing this mask to conceal my identity. I'm wearing it to prevent inhaling a virus, you idiotic frackface".
