Launch: Lucky - And a Dinosaur

Lucky is a Safari extension that removes the clutter from the Google search results page, leaving you with the 10 blue links. Update: Clarifying the Yahoo and Google confusion with Lucky. Update:...

If you're wondering why your Google search looks the same, you need to set your default search engine to Yahoo.

Lucky fetches Google's results and shows them on Yahoo. This way, you can switch back to the original Google if needed.

@zhenyi looks great! Congratulations!
@zhenyi Trying it out today. Any plans to adapt it on other search engines like DDG?
@bcomnes Adapt it to… remove clutter from DDG? Probably not. Other search engines aren't as bad as Google 😅
@zhenyi I don’t get it, this extension should be for Google Search, but the instructions to set it up tell me I should select Yahoo search as search engine for the extension to work?
@mrzool the extension fetches results from Google and displays them in yahoo.com 😅 so you can fall back to the unmodified Google search should you need it
@zhenyi i see… broken for me, sadly
@mrzool hmm, try force quitting and reopening both the Lucky app and Safari?
@zhenyi still no luck. I’m on iOS 17.5.1, not sure if that’s relevant
@mrzool try deleting the app, reinstall, and go through the setup process again?
@zhenyi the extension is already enabled after deleting and reinstalling so no setup needed. Still no luck, but I’m getting a different error message now…
@mrzool err, what happen if you search for something simple, like "testing"?
@zhenyi back to square one apparently 😐
@mrzool 😞 do you have any network setup that might block the Lucky app from accessing google.com?
@zhenyi nothing of the sort. Also just spent quite some time disabling all other extensions I have, blockers and such, to see if something was interfering, but no dice. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news 😐
@mrzool this is gonna sound weird, but what if you try connecting to a wifi network? 😬
@zhenyi doesn’t make any difference. My first attempts were on a wifi network, and now I’m back home and it’s still not working. iCloud Relay also doesn’t make a difference
@mrzool ahh OK. I'm really sorry about this ☹️ I'll see what I can do in the next update. Maybe include a built-in troubleshooter…
@zhenyi hard to do that when you have no idea what’s going wrong! I wish I could send you some logs or something but I have no idea how to do any troubleshooting on iOS
@mrzool I’m having weird issues as well. It just flat out doesn’t work at all. Google looks totally normal and the extension is enabled in Safari (I checked in Settings). Rebooted, and restarted both apps a bunch. No dice. 😕
@boateng you’re supposed to select Yahoo as Safari’s default search engine for the extension to work which yeah is pretty confusing, but that’s how it works
@mrzool Ohhhhhh, yeah, I was absolutely twisted up. Got it now, thanks!
@mrzool Version 1.0.3 is out now. Can you give it a try and see if it fixes your problems?
@zhenyi already tested, it’s working now! Great job finding the problem

@zhenyi Enjoying it so far! Would you consider adding support for uBlacklist rulesets?

@boogah I'm not sure how to add support for uBlacklist rulesets, but I'll check it out 😬

@zhenyi Not a huge deal. Just thought it'd be nice to have a way to bulk import blocked domains.

Keep up the great work!

@zhenyi What happens if you’re on a network connection that Google has decided needs to go through multiple rounds of “choose all the images with a...” palaver before it will load google’s home page? Is your plugin instructing Yahoo to search Google (so the query at Google comes from a Yahoo IP), or is it searching google, and then displaying via yahoo?
@zhenyi Is there any particular reason why this is not available on Apple Vision Pro? I was quite excited to try this out on it.
