If you are posting an image, video or audio on here, remember to add an alt text description if you can. This helps blind or deaf people access your post, and it also helps your post be much more widely shared.

Many people on here only boost posts that include a description. If you want your post to be boosted, add a description if you are able.

(If you are unable to add a description, you can include the hashtag #Alt4me which asks people to reply with a description.)

@FediTips Does it has to be in english or can it be in other (like french, occitan or euskera) ?

@quentin_valentin

It's usually best to have the same language you used in the post.

@FediTips This is good to know. Thanks!

@FediTips

I usually skip posts that do not include a description and the URL is not self-descriptive.

Sometimes I will check them out if I am confident that the poster would not normally link to junk.

But, I detinitely prefer a description.

For example, I tend to never check youtube links unless there is a description. It may be interesting, but I may not want to spend the time watching a possibly long video at the moment.

@FediTips If I post from worspress using activitypub, does the alt text from wordpress get added on mastodon too?

Je le fais régulièrement.

I do this on a regular basis.

Le problème, c'est quand on veut booster une image, ou un article, qui n'a pas mis d'ALT dans son ou ses images !

The problem is when you want to boost an image, or an article, that hasn't put an ALT in its images!

J'ai eu le cas récemment (le chaton sur un pouf orange) : j'ai du copier l'image sur mon disque, et faire un article AVEC le ALT !

I had this happen to me recently (the kitten on an orange pouffe): I had to copy the image onto my disk, and make an article WITH the ALT!

@medard

Yes, this is a problem!

If you see this happen, you can add a description in the replies with the hashtag #Alt4You and then boost the reply, telling people to view the image above.

People who need the description for accessibility reasons will be able to search for this tag in the replies.

@FediTips
To save Traffic, in settings i opted to load images only if requested. But the alt text is displayed.
I do enjoy not to watch cat-content.
@FediTips Yes, but! I see an increasing number of #toots with some text describing an image, an image, and an alt text which is a copy of the first text. This is plain stupid.
