Spring, Week One Day One The old witch apologized for the state of the cottage, but I’m just glad to have a place to start over. One that comes with equipment is a bonus! It’s a lovely cottage. I’m still not sure if I should do the Calling. Maybe if I’d done it sooner I wouldn’t have to start ov...

@rowyn
Possibly more helpful than Miss Smoke's last appearance, but that last bit seems needlessly obscure and possibly threatening.

If Honor did something to deserve this nonsense, it was a doozie. I rather doubt that he did.

@rowyn
Well, this'd be a great opportunity for Honor and Umbral and Magnus to go over the alert doll's notes, with bonus points if anyone thought to mention that the doll looks like Cassie with some bonus features from Blackpaw, but a certain party is being rude, pushy, and unhelpful instead ...
@kelkyag Umbral: *snarls in 'hasn't-found-Cassie-yet'*
@rowyn
<growls back in "you are screwing this up even more than you did meeting the last new witch">
@kelkyag Umbral: "It doesn't matter how much people hate me so long as I FIND HER"
Umbral: "...and if I don't find her, nothing matters"

@rowyn
People who don't hate you are a lot more likely to help you find Cassie.

And as you just pointed out, you are the Dark Ruler of the Underlands, and as such you accepted responsibilities that matter a great deal to a great many people, no matter Cassie's status. Also, many of those people also like Cassie and are trying to help find her. Stop stomping around scaring people and put on your diplomat hat!

@kelkyag Umbral: "If I *could* don't you think I *would*?"
@rowyn
That you think you can't is very worrying.
@rowyn Miss Rat is not only cute and patient, but also helpful! ❤️
@Annmie Honor: "Easily my favorite patient so far. 💜"
@rowyn oh thats an interesting lead!
@rowyn
<hopes for useful info>

@rowyn
Sending Rocky to Gren is interesting, but "to take care of" might just be a routine checkup, as figuring out his maintenance needs was still a work in progress.

Not checking in with Peia supports an unplanned disappearance. (I imagine Umbral has spoken with the kobold they were gaming with, too.) The mid-page stop in Cassie's journal supports that, too (and that she got back home to start updating her journal). Honor might find that, or it may've been grabbed with Cassie ...

@rowyn
Umbral can't check in with Peia directly, though, given the light in her prison, which means some intermediary did that. More information-garbling opportunities.
@rowyn
<appreciates Fiona being friendly, too>
@kelkyag Fiona: "We can't all be awful!"
@rowyn maybe! or maybe someone impersonated someone else, or messed with their memories or….
@Satsuma Gosh, tho, who could do that?? 🤔

@Satsuma @rowyn
<nod> Entirely too plausible.
<tries to remember who besides Cassie and Umbral have taken the clear mind potions>

I think Cassie wrote that one down, which means Honor can find the recipe. (When he has time to read everything instead of being up to his ears in patients.)

@kelkyag @Satsuma Honor: "I still haven't seen Cassie's journal. Maybe she took it with her."
@rowyn @Satsuma
Oh, dear, I somehow thought Cassie had a recipe log separate from her journal.
@kelkyag @Satsuma Honor: "No, the only writing in the cottage were the notes from Old Witch Maeve. Which aren't a journal either. Or a recipe book. More a 'how to brew potions and where to find the reagents for them in this specific area '"

@rowyn @Satsuma
That sounds like a more useful first reference for a new witch than a rambling journal, but ... both would be good? Or maybe witches have to develop their own recipes?

Not even any of Cassie's light reading novels lying around? That's differently weird.

@kelkyag @Satsuma Honor: "Sorry, there's some printed books, too. I meant handwritten stuff."
@rowyn
<appreciates L being friendly>
@kelkyag L: "He seems like a good witch, doesn't he? I'm sure he'll do well."
@rowyn
I hope this introduction goes well.
@rowyn finally someone who prefers Honor to Cassie 😂
@Satsuma Honor: "Oh is THAT why my comment made him so happy? He was a little scary at first, but really quite friendly."
@rowyn
Aww, the sphinx learned something! Alas that unexpected riddle challenges are still obnoxious and should be thwarted.
@kelkyag Sphinx:

@rowyn
You're not even defending access to some important place or thing on Moonbreaker Mountain! Requiring an answer to a riddle to proceed on a quest would at least be traditional. You're plunking yourself down unexpectedly in front of people who're tired and trying to go home. What do you expect them to do if they don't have the answer you want? Are you trying to trap people on the mountain?

Go talk to the kobolds about traps and riddles and sportsmanship.

@kelkyag Sphinx: "But I'm a sphinx! Asking riddles is our whole thing. Riddles are fun."

@rowyn
Riddles can be fun! Set yourself up to find people who are looking for a challenge and will enjoy riddling with you, or at least accept it as a reasonable requirement for passage.

Seriously, talk with some of the friendlier kobolds -- maybe the Red Claw, they seem to be enthusiastic good sports. Or visit the Strange and propose a riddle challenge at the arena.

@kelkyag Sphinx: "..."
Sphinx: *takes notes*
@rowyn
What are your goals? Maximum riddling? Expanding your riddle collection? Thwarting people with riddles? Making friends to riddle with? Something else ...?
@kelkyag Sphinx: "Um. Upholding the proud traditions of my people?"

@rowyn
Great! What are the important aspects of those traditions?
1) Riddles
2) ...?
3) ...?

You can fly. Moonbreaker Mountain is perilous terrain for people who can't. Would you consider offering scouting or ravine-crossing assistance in exchange for riddles answered or new riddles?

@kelkyag @rowyn Or become a teacher and give pop quizzes!
@Tuftears @rowyn
Not what I'd usually think of as riddles, but at least as baffling to insufficiently prepared students. But it's also the teacher's job to provide the students with the tools they need ...
