Spring, Week One Day One The old witch apologized for the state of the cottage, but I’m just glad to have a place to start over. One that comes with equipment is a bonus! It’s a lovely cottage. @rowyn
<relieved>
<cheers very, very quietly for clarity of mind, and for material and emotional support>

@rowyn
Yay working!
I hope Honor got some of the ongoing protection effect in the tonic, too.

Umbral deliberately taking a less scary form is promising. Not sure how much to worry about the coughing and sputtering and dropping the bottle.

@kelkyag Honor: "I hope it has a protection effect too but I have no idea how or why that would work, so...🤞"

@rowyn
<appreciates Miss Smoke assisting>

I hope she and Honor can have a less scary conversation and figure out how to cooperate on both finding Cassie and taking care of patients in the meanwhile.

@kelkyag
Miss Smoke: *so smol! Not even as long as a human arm! could not possibly be scary*
Honor and Seeker: *so much side-eye*
@rowyn @kelkyag Smol but fierce! At least if you're not her designated cauldron handler.
@rowyn
So smol, and yet somehow a huge voice and great billows of icy red smoke intimidated Ayanda, Honor, and Seeker all out of the cottage.
@rowyn the differences between honor and cassie’s magics (or at least what they find important enough to write down) is fascinating
@Satsuma @rowyn
Indeed!
They're at rather different places in their careers as witches, so the things they can do casually or need to focus on carefully differ.
Also, given how much of witchcraft is intention -- the reagents have power and aspects, but the aspects are very broad -- even tiny differences in attitude & perspective matter.
To complicate the current case, Honor is following one of Cassie's recipes without having read all of her journals to understand her take on potion design.

@kelkyag @Satsuma Ooh I meant to respond to Satsuma's message days ago but spaced it

The Apothecaria rules suggest that you're playing a new witch who just learned witchcraft from the old witch's notes. I totally ignored this when I started the game.

But when I started writing Honor, I really wanted to contrast the two characters' experience level and styles. I'm so happy that's come through and is interesting to readers. 💖

@kelkyag @rowyn Yeah Honor is clearly more of a novice, even if Cassie was also new to some things (like having a familiar) at her introduction also. But also I get the impression that their fundamental approaches are a bit different even once you account for the skill differential
@Satsuma @kelkyag Yes! Cassie was already set in her ways and only paid attention to what Witch Maeve said about reagents in the High Rannoc area. Where Honor learned everything from Seeker and from Maeve's notes.
@rowyn I for one look forward to a more Umbralish Umbral!
I'm really impressed they had the clarity of mind to ask for a portion of clarity.
Hand in there, Witch Honor, it will get better soon.
@Annmie Umbral: "Only because Cassie mentioned clarity potions repeatedly in her journal. Including 'if you think taking one is ridiculous and you're sure it's unnecessary, you should definitely take one.' And I realized mine must have with off by now."
@rowyn @Annmie
... which means Cassie's has probably worn off, too. Oh dear.
@kelkyag @Annmie Umbral: "Yes. Right about when she went missing."
@rowyn
That was simpler than I expected. Why the twirl around Honor, though?
@rowyn
Oh dear. There are going to be regrets.

@rowyn
Possibly more helpful than Miss Smoke's last appearance, but that last bit seems needlessly obscure and possibly threatening.

If Honor did something to deserve this nonsense, it was a doozie. I rather doubt that he did.

@rowyn
Well, this'd be a great opportunity for Honor and Umbral and Magnus to go over the alert doll's notes, with bonus points if anyone thought to mention that the doll looks like Cassie with some bonus features from Blackpaw, but a certain party is being rude, pushy, and unhelpful instead ...
@kelkyag Umbral: *snarls in 'hasn't-found-Cassie-yet'*
@rowyn
<growls back in "you are screwing this up even more than you did meeting the last new witch">
@kelkyag Umbral: "It doesn't matter how much people hate me so long as I FIND HER"
Umbral: "...and if I don't find her, nothing matters"

@rowyn
People who don't hate you are a lot more likely to help you find Cassie.

And as you just pointed out, you are the Dark Ruler of the Underlands, and as such you accepted responsibilities that matter a great deal to a great many people, no matter Cassie's status. Also, many of those people also like Cassie and are trying to help find her. Stop stomping around scaring people and put on your diplomat hat!

@kelkyag Umbral: "If I *could* don't you think I *would*?"
@rowyn
That you think you can't is very worrying.
@kelkyag Umbral: "Yes. EXACTLY."
@rowyn
That suggests that the clear mind potion has worn off and someone is messing with your head?
@kelkyag Umbral: "Yes. Guess what the only way I can get a potion to fix it is."
@rowyn
Working with the witch who is RIGHT HERE?
@rowyn Miss Rat is not only cute and patient, but also helpful! ❤️
@Annmie Honor: "Easily my favorite patient so far. 💜"
@rowyn oh thats an interesting lead!
@rowyn
<hopes for useful info>

@rowyn
Sending Rocky to Gren is interesting, but "to take care of" might just be a routine checkup, as figuring out his maintenance needs was still a work in progress.

Not checking in with Peia supports an unplanned disappearance. (I imagine Umbral has spoken with the kobold they were gaming with, too.) The mid-page stop in Cassie's journal supports that, too (and that she got back home to start updating her journal). Honor might find that, or it may've been grabbed with Cassie ...

@rowyn
Umbral can't check in with Peia directly, though, given the light in her prison, which means some intermediary did that. More information-garbling opportunities.
