In saying someone is a "DEI hire", the speaker is implying the referenced individual got the job only because of their status as a minority, giving them priority over whites so that the company can point to them and say "see, we don't just hire whites". In other words, it's racist as shit.

I'm working for a conservative US company in Europe. Diversity is key in the corporate culture because they don't want any talents to be excluded and (maybe more important π) any customers to be excluded. But I am sure there are no DEI hires.
But beside such 'economic' reasons they know - and it's a fact - that everyone is feeling better in such an environment.
