Exclusive: Taboola to sell ads for Apple

Most people know Taboola as the company responsible for placing chumbox ads at the bottom of many news stories online.

Axios
“We’re the most valuable company in the world. We can do anything!”
Anything == run Taboola ads
@joesteel ads in stocks app? Wtf? I guess Apple users are not allowed to make fun of Samsung/xiaomi/huawei devices now
@joesteel The line must always go up, and go up faster 🤦🏻‍♂️🇺🇸🙈
@joesteel I'm not normally super cynical, but who is getting a kickback for using Taboola. Their ads are the absolute WORST ads around. It's all spammy clickbait. Apple really is all about making money and has basically ruined their brand with this type of agreement.
@waynedixon The people that decide Taboola is good are the people concerned with short term ad sales inventory and revenue. That’s why so many online publishers use it. The people making the call want to work their way to a better publisher because they care about saying they generated X that quarter. Whatever happens to the company or the brand is immaterial to them.
@joesteel @waynedixon
Uncertain if bad decisions like this are driven mostly by greed and personal ambition, or if Apple is so hopelessly out of fresh product ideas that this is the only way they can think of to keep the shareholders happy.
@joesteel @waynedixon Feels like the inevitable outcome of giving someone a KPI and telling them “grow this number, I don’t care how you do it”
@joesteel
I wouldn't use Apple News if it were free. I deleted the app from all my devices ages ago.
@joesteel @stroughtonsmith I'm not actually sure Taboola is beneath what already is there. Equal, sure, but beneath? That's a loooooow bar to clear.

@joesteel What a pile of garbage. Nobody at Apple ever looked at any web site that has Taboola ads at the bottom?

I literally can't think of a worse business to turn to for help with ad placements in Apple's own apps.

@joesteel @gruber this might be the story that finally convinces Gruber to use the C-word in a headline. This is the least “Apple” move possible. Pure vomit.
@electranyx Nah, he’ll find some way to defend it.
Apple Strikes Deal With Taboola to Sell Ads for Apple News

So while I don’t think it’s good news that Apple is partnering with Taboola, I don’t expect it to make any discernible difference in the ad quality or frequency.
