Has anyone of you ever successfully started meditating?

Various doctors have advised me to give it a try for various reasons. It's considered a miracle cure for stress, anxiety, migraines, poor self-discipline, and about a hundred other things. But every half-hearted attempt at guided meditation has only made me more stressed.

@mhhhkathi What have you tried so far? I‘ve dabbled with meditation, but my monkey mind keeps me from establishing a routine. Yoga works better for me, but only in the studio. And one thing where I successfully managed to shut out my thoughts, was surprisingly, Kirtan (aka singing mantras). It was a weird experience, as I’m not a spiritual person, but completely relaxing (and I think that stimulating the vagus nerve while singing heavily contributes to that)

@Doertie I've heard a lot about kirtan recently. Do you just do it alone at home or in a group?
I've done yoga (with YouTube videos) a few times so far, but while it felt good physically, I was never able to relax mentally.

I think I was just unlucky with the guided meditations because either the topic didn't really fit or I found their voice annoying 😬

@mhhhkathi Sorry, somehow I never get any notifications on here!

I only did kirtan once, in a group, in my yoga studio. I‘m also never able to completely turn my mind off during yoga, but it works miso much better when I’m doing it in class vs at home. Plus I’m very picky when it comes to the teaching style - if it’s in English, I can deal with most classes, but when it’s in German, I often cannot stand the choice of language and tone of the teacher 😅

@mhhhkathi Oh and you might give the „Achtsamkeit“-Podcast by Deutschlandfunk a Listen, maybe you’ll find something there (and they end each session with a brief meditation)

@mhhhkathi 🙋‍♀️ I have, with Headspace and Calm.

At the start it was a real struggle. Body scans still work best for me, everything else and my brain just goes everywhere with thoughts. It's obviously not a miracle cure, but for me it helped me to just be more mindful, in general regulate my thoughts better and it has also allowed me to flee into myself here and there (dentist 😅)

@foosel thanks for sharing your experiences – I just downloaded Headspace and am now testing if I can work with it :)
@mhhhkathi this video got me to successfully start meditating because it made it make more sense. My ADHD sucks, meditation is an exercise in focus control, and that exercise helps with a variety of issues simultaneously. If anything, it made me realize that you need a specific goal to stick with meditation, not just knowledge of the benefits.
