Today I installed a food-sharing-cupboard in my neighbourhood!

(Thanks to @hydroponictrash for the inspiration).

I found the old cupboard in the street, took some food from our storage (mostly stuff we don't use up) and printed the paper - that's it!

For the moment, it's more of an experiment for me, gauging how my neighbours will react to this sort of thing.

Update: bad news 🙁

It took less than 24 hours for people to trash the food-sharing-cupboard. They even made an effort to slash the packages.

I'll think about improvements - maybe a different location; maybe the cupboard isn't ideal for this sort of thing.

For the moment, I'm sad and a bit disheartened.

@lex qué comida había?
Lo armaste de nuevo?

@lufertec

@lex no te desanimes...
Cambios
Espero...
@lex Yeah the location was probably not great. Looks like a place where the rowdy teens from the neighbourhood gather in the evenings. Maybe better to start in a semi-public space, like the staircase of an larger apartment complex or so.
@lex
Oh no! 😨
What's wrong with those people?
@lex Oh no! Maybe it is because of the place - it is such a nice place for young people and maybe they did not want to feel like there parents are just around the corner providing them with food and giving them instructions… I wish they would at least just have moved it to another place - I mean food is super substantial..

@lex I feel you on this. I've had my locker trashed before too. But keep going with it. It might need to be moved to a different area. Crazy teenagers seem to be the target demographic of fucking good things up haha. But if it's in the right spot (in the open but still protected, not in a spot where if people were fucking it up they wouldn't be seen) that can help.

I have it right outside my house, on a residential street for example. But I experimented with a smaller one in a public park and it went OK, with the occasional redo when someone went a little wild.

@hydroponictrash

thanks! it's good to hear I'm not the only one with that experience :)

@lex thanks for your effort and vision to offer this. I feel more sad than angry at this outcome update.
@lex Then I saw @Bender 's post that this well could have been non-human animals (like racoons) and I felt better
@lex keep going! don't give up!
You're right to feel disheartened, but you can do this :) You're doing an awesome thing

@lex - Deleting my original comment. Reading others' comments, it might absolutely be wild animals!

Getting a pantry thats a bit more off the ground and with latches that humans (and not raccoons) can use might help a lot!

@lex @tinker In urban areas, I’ve seen robust public bookshelves, which seem to be left alone by vandals. Maybe find one, talk to the people operating it, and ask if you can put your shelf next to it? Hopefully the proximity will deter further wanton destruction.

Who tf hates others so much they destroy food? wtf?

@schrotthaufen @lex - I get a person wanting to sabotage a movement and destroying it for political reasons but even that is rare.

Thats why I think this would be an animal at first. Like a racoon or dog or something.

@tinker @lex Oh, that makes sense! Should have thought of that first.

@lex Gibt es Raccoonen in Deutshland? Oder andere tieren wie dieses?

(Sorry. My German is very rudimentary) but I hope the idea is clear. That looks like the work of an animal, I think.

@ironcladlou

you're doing great! 😍

yes, there are raccoons in germany. some users also suggested that - I'm not sure, it didn't look like something animals would've done, but I could be wrong!

@lex

Irgendeine Behörde wird das entfernen.

A random authority will take it away.

@Drahreg01

Possible! But tbh the trashcans in that place only get emptied like once a month or something, so it might take them a while :)

@Drahreg01 @lex
Not necessarily - there is an established network for foodsharing in germany - maybe they also do some international networking - I do not remember this aspect in detail.. It is just not well known everywhere - which is why there is a link below.

https://foodsharing.de/

Lebensmittel teilen statt wegwerfen – foodsharing

@lex Very nice experiment.
What is the social make-up of your neighbourhood?
(sorry I'm french with deepl, maybe the question has no sense)

Anyway, keep us up to date, at least with the #solarpunk #diy hashtags which I subscribe to.
